New Action Sports Tour Coming in 2005
Presented by NBC and Clear Channel

A NOTE FROM SKATELOG EDITOR KATHIE FRY: Interesting that this announcement was made only a few days after the Outdoor Life Network announced they purchased the Gravity Games in early 2004, and therefore those games will be broadcast on a cable outlet in the future instead on an NBC outlet.

On March 22, 2004 NBC Sports and Clear Channel Entertainment announced their plans to launch a new Action Sports Tour in 2005. The tour will include a NASCAR-like points system and year-end champions will be crowned in several action sports including skateboarding, stunt bike, motocross, and in some locations, inline skating and surfing.

The five-city tour is part of NBC's strategy of bypassing major sports leagues in favor of alternative events that don't require large rights fees. "Action sports, which burst on the scene in the last five to seven years, have been growing in popularity and participation," says Jon Miller, senior vice president of programming for NBC, which will own and operate the tour with Clear Channel. Mr. Miller also noted, "Sponsorship of actions sports events like the X Games and BMX reached $80 million last year, and the same time, action sports haven't become TOO popular. One thing that makes action sports popular with advertisers is they do not have to pay enormous premiums that go to contracts and bonus money for many other top sports."

Clear Channel Entertainment will run the tour events and the NBC Sports will produce and live broadcasts during the April-to-October season. The events are also expect3d to be broadcast on a cable outlet that has not yet been selected..

The Action Sports Tour will start in April of 2005 and run through October.
