2004 Mobile Skatepark Series Cincinnati
Day 2 Report - Saturday, May 29, 2004
|
Report and results from day 2 of the Mobile Skatepark
Series event in Cincinnati, Ohio.
DAY 2 OF THE 2004 MSS IN CINCINNATI OHIO
MAY 29, 2004 (SATURDAY)
The second day of the Mobile Skatepark
Series event underway now at Sawyer Point Park
in Cincinnati, Ohio was marked by
stiff professional and amateur inline skating competition
in both street and vert.
Pro Vert Finals
Japanese phenom
Eito Yasutoko
threw down a near perfect second run to
nab top honors in the pro vert competition. The only thing more astonishing
than Yasutoko's winning run was the fact that his first run would have
easily won the competition. Yasutoko hauled in the gold medal by landing
a mind bending combination of huge air tricks, including two of his signature
double backflips in the same run. Yasutoko remains firmly entrenched as the
world's number one ranked inline vert skater following an undefeated 2003
season marked by gold medal performances at action sports' three most
prestigious events - the LG Action Sports Championships, the X Games
and the Gravity Games. Yasutoko's victorious stretch started during last
year's Cincinnati Mobile Skatepark Series event when he became the first
skater to land a double flatspin 180 in competition.
Rounding out the top three in the pro vert inline competition were Eito
Yasutoko's younger brother
Takeshi Yasutoko
and Australian skater
Shane Yost, who rank number two and number three in the world respectively.
Last year's MSS Cincinnati amateur vert champion Patrick Zimmermann
from Germany missed the podium but drew loud cheers from the crowd in
his pro vert skating debut.
Pro Street Finals
In men's competition, the number two ranked professional inline street
skater following the 2003 season launched himself into the 2004 season
with a powerful performance and a dominating victory. With a score of 89
after two runs, French skater
Stephane Alfano
defeated today's silver
medalist by nearly 8 points. Alfano's victorious first run was laced
with his trademark technical lip tricks, creative big air transfers and
precise spin tricks.
Finishing the day in second place was Brian Murphy. Earning the bronze
medal was 2003 ASA Rookie of the Year
Richie Velasquez
.
Women's pro street gold medalist
Katie Ketchum
finished the day barely
three points shy of becoming the first female skater to qualify for a
top-10 finish against the male competitors.
Fallon Heffernan
earned the
silver medal with a daring bag of tricks that included a huge
quaterpipe-to-top-of-wallride transfer, a trick few other competitors
- including men - even attempted. Taking the bronze medal was rookie
pro Kaya Turski in her first pro street competition.
Amateur Street Finals
French amateur
Steven Aleil
turned in a clean and very technical second
run to capture the gold medal and an automatic berth to the 2004 ASA
World Championships. Mike Falcone from Eldersberg, MD won the silver
medal while Jerry Butler from Shaker Heights, OH took the bronze.
Joining the top three at this year's amateur World Championships are
brothers Scott and Kevin Raser from Snellville, GA, as well as Jimmy
Hake from Youngstown, OH. Local skater Aaron Pyle from Middletown,
OH finished in seventh place and only missed earning a World Championship
invitation by two points.
The Mobile Skatepark Series resumes on Sunday with amateur skateboard
street prelims at 10 a.m. Tomorrow, the Mobile Skatepark Series also
features professional skateboarding demos and best trick competition
in both vert and street.
