Skating vs. Cycling With a Baby
I am very interested in this discussion comparing the safety of skating with a baby in a jogging stroller to the safety of cycling with a baby in a child seat on the back of a bicycle. We are very accustomed to seeing babies in bicycle child seats, so people seem to be more accepting of that practice, but is skating with a baby stroller really any more dangerous? Happy Birthday to Fallon Heffernan
Today is the birthday of aggressive pro skater Fallon Heffernan, who was born on August 29, 1986 in Jacksonville, Florida USA. Fallon is only 18 years old, but she is already one of the top female aggressive pro skaters in the world. She finished in 2nd and 3rd place at the 2001 and 2002 X Games and she was the first female skater to land a 900 spin in competition, a feat she accomplished at the 2003 ASA Pro Tour event in Cincinnati. I enjoyed watching you skate last week in Sacramento Fallon, and I hope you had a wonderful birthday today! [View Larger Photo]

Carl Hills Broke His Leg in Sacramento
I am so sorry to report that aggressive pro skater Carl Hills broke his leg at the ASA Pro Tour event in Sacramento last week. I witnessed his fall and it was frightening to see. The fall happened in the skate park before the actual competition began. Carl jumped up very high during a practice and fell straight down onto the skate park surface, landing very hard on what appeared (from where I was standing) to be his hip. He was obviously in a great deal of pain after the fall, and I heard later in the day that he broke his femur bone. My thoughts are with you and your family Carl and I hope you will recover very quickly and be back on skates in no time at all [Carl With His Baby Son]

Jaren Grob finished in first place earlier this month at the LGE Action Sports Championships in South Africa. Jaren toured South Africa as part of the Roces aggressive pro tour, and I heard that while he was there, he was suppose to wear a tuxedo to a banquet where he would meet Nelson Mandela. Skating in Trinidad and Tobago
"I live in Trinidad and Tobago in the Caribbean and I am glad to have discovered this site! I am probably the only person in T and T who has a real passion for skating. Skating is not as popular here as it used to be decades ago when competitions were held in our country. I want to reintroduce skating to T and T. Any suggestions? I would really appreciate your help." [Read More in Our Forum]

Can a Skater Lose Weight on Exercise Alone?
"How many times have I had to endure some simpleton boring me to tears about their miracle diet and how it was a sure way to lose weight. Excercise in addition to a change in diet is a much more succesful way to lose weight. Well now we have come a full circle and Kathie's article suggests that excercise alone can drop the pounds, regardless of how bad your eating habits are...." [Read More in Our Forum]

How to Protect Yourself from a Dog

Inline Speed Coach Jay Etheredge
Southern California inline speed coach Jay Etheredge was born on August 20, 1962 in Long Beach California. Jay was one of the top master speed skaters in the U.S. until he was seriously injured at a Super Week competition in 1999, an injury that required several surgeries over a multiple year period. Jay is now coaching speed skating several times at week in the City of Orange, California and he enjoys his two children - a girl and a boy - very much. I took this photo of Jay with his small son at the 2003 Long Beach Inline Marathon in Southern California [View Larger Photo]
