Speed Rule Changes Announced
at USARS Bard Meeting
|
Grand Veterans Category (Age 55+)
Finally after two years of trying (Jim White was originally
responsible for the first letter to the speed committee requesting
this new event), "Grand Veterans" will be held at the regional
and national level effective this season as a DEMONSTRATION sport.
What does this mean? It means that Jim you better get busy signing
everyone and their brother up that is 55 years of age and older
and get hem to skate regionals and nationals if they qualify as
this division as well as JO MASTERS (age 35 years and older) will
be reviewed at the end of the season to see if it should become
a permenant division. The distances chosen were: JO MASTERS - 500
meter and 1000 meter and for the GRAND VETERANS - 500 meter 700
meter and 1000 meter, men and women. Congratulations to Jim and
all of the coaches who were strong supporters of these two groups.
NO new relay events were added.
500 Meter is Back for Pro Men and Women
Also passed and effective immediately, "to add the 500 meter
back into the Pro Men and Women's division." The 100 meter
will remain as well as the 1500 and 3000. There will now be four
distances. For the Pro's another change, "use of the oval track
(currently used by NIRA) will be used for the points race ONLY
in the Pro division for men and women. Again all of these rules
are effective IMMEDIATELY.
All Skaters Will Receive Amateur Cards
Something that many of us as coaches have been pushing for since
the February board meeting was passed.....all skaters will receive
an amateur card at the BOTTOM of the 8 1/2X11 sheet of paper
stating that your registration has been received. Do you need to
carry this card with you? No you do not, BUT if the rink or venue
hosting the meet does not show you on their most "current" list of
amateur speed skaters, and this has just recently happened, you will
not be allowed to skate unless you purchase a card. So...if I were you,
take this paper amateur card, have it laminated and put it in your
wallet. For those of you who have already received your receipt of
registration and your card is not at the bottom.....they will be
sending out new ones. Please understand that all of these changes
were made this past weekend and many "receipt of registration" letters
have already gone out.
National Dates Have Changed Again
Due to regional dates being
set in stone for so many regional events (held in auditoriums
and such) the National have been moved two days so
that all regional events can be completed. The board hated making
more changes after it has been announced but this was important so
that regionals could be held for those that had contracts. The new
dates are as follows:
JO starts with practice on July 13th, skating on July 14-15,
Standard will start with 4 person relays on July 16, standard
division on July 17-20. The Outdoor Corhusker Classic will be on Monday,
July 21, 2003.
Outdoor Nationals in Colorado Springs
Outdoor Nationals will be held in Colorado Springs, CO this year
over Memorial weekend plus a few days. Many changes will be happening
with Jr and Sr World team and I would prefer to wait and have you all
see these changes in print as I am not sure that I documented
everything correctly. We will again have practice PRIOR to Outdoor
Nationals for three days. Each day practice will be available on the
track (although currently the Jr and Sr World team will be chosen from
the ROAD only), from 8-11 am and 1-4pm for $10.00, whether you skate
one or both practices. You are probably wondering why practice will
be held on the track and not on the road course. Due to the lack of
availablity of the road course for those times and that many days, it
was decided that the practice was more to allow skaters to fly in early,
loosen their legs and use the time to become acclamated to high alttitude,
than it was to get used to the road course. If we were going to have
practice it needed to be on the track. Again this is a choice that
each skater must make and as a coach I am thankful that USARS is willing
to have someone there to run practice for my skaters, no matter where it is.
Residency for 2003 World Team
For those that make the world team, residency has been scheduled from
July 25 - August 15, 2003. It was decided to choose those dates with the
option of making it shorter if needed. But once we put dates in to
USOC we are stuck....so they wanted to be sure they had enough days.
World's dates are supposed to be changing from the "first week in
September" to the "last week in August". We will know more after
the CIC meeting in December with China.
Banked Track Clinic in Colorado Springs
Banked track clinic in Colorado Springs; currently there is only one
scheduled for spring. The dates have been approved by the board but
MUST still be approved by USOC. They are:
Thursday, May 1st 8:00am registration. IMMEDIATELY following
registration you will head over to the track until 11:00am. Lunch
will be 11:00am-1:00pm, next track session is 1:00-4:00pm and then
off skates 6-8pm. this same schedule will continue for Friday and
Saturday. On Sunday the clinic will start at 8:00am-11:00am and then
12:30pm-3:30pm. Then the clinic is over on Sunday after 3:30. Again
USARS is awaiting final approval from USOC on these dates.
More Information
There were
other changes made but I wanted to get these out to the skaters as they
are very important. Please remember that I was there at the Board Meeting,
but finalization of all rules and changes MUST come from USARS. If you
have any questions you are more than welcome to e-mail me or call
Richard Hawkins, Speed Director at USARS at (402) 483-7551.
