A Report on the 2004 World Environment Games
October 2004 in Bahia, Brazil

A report on the first annual World Environment Games which took place October 23-30, 2004 in the coastal state of Bahia in Brazil.
Overall Report

325 athletes representing 14 nations on 4 continents registered to compete in the first annual World Environment Games in October of 2004. There were 17 sports and 23 disciplines and the athlete who participated in the most sports was Diane Chélius of Luxembourg.

In 2004 all of the events took place on a route that ran from the charming provincial village of Ilhéus to Itacaré, a magnificent and exotic village on the Cocoa Coast at the very end of the eco-highway Estrada Parque Ilhéus-Itacaré. That highway winds along the Atlantic ocean through a breathtakingly beautiful coastal rainforest.

  • The 20 kilometer race for inline skaters, was very challenging, with a route along the Linha Verde ("green line"), an ecological highway that winds along the Atlantic coastline. The distance originally planned was 40 kilometers, but the organizing committee decided at the last moment to reduce the distance by half, because of the extreme unusually hot weather conditions on that particular day (hot, hot, hot !!!)

  • The 32 kilometer "fun roll" inline skating discovery event (with no ranking and no timing) was on a completely flat route along the Estrada Parque Ilhéus Itacaré, another ecological coastal highway crossing the rainforest. The original planned distance was 65 kilometers but because of the heat, none of the participants wished to skate the second portion, which included several long climbs. The skaters stopped at the bottom of the first hill, enjoyed grilled fish on a wild beach, and then walked 15 kilometers along the beach in the afternoon, until sunset. And because the skaters felt guilty about not skating that second hilly portion of the route, they all went rafting the next day! The water temperature was 26 degrees C, which was quite unusual for rafting !
