Kildonan Park Closed to Auto Traffic
Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada

In 2004 Kildonan Park in Winnipeg, Canada was closed to auto traffic for 4 hours every Sunday evening in an effort to prevent local car enthusiasts from driving back and forth through the park showing off their prize vehicles. That change in rules has allowed inline skaters, cyclists and walkers to take over the road in that area of the park.

Kildonan Park Closed to Sunday Night Auto Traffic

Beginning on Sunday, April 25, 2004 Peguis Drive in the north section of Kildonan Park in Winnipeg Canada will be closed to vehicles every Sunday evening from 6:00 through 10:00 pm.

This is very good news for local skaters and cyclists, but the real reason for the road closure was a growing number of complaints from residents in the area about the traffic, pollution, and noise caused by the many car enthusiasts who would cruise back and forth ever weekend, showing off their prized vehicles

The change in rules will allow inline skaters, cyclists and walkers to take over the road in that area of the park.

The road closure in Kildonan Park is a pilot project that will be in effect until the June 27, 2004. At time the city will decide if the road closure will remain in effect through the summer months.

Local authorities say the road will definitely be enforced: Police officers will be at the barricades blocking entrance to the park and if violators will be ticketed.

About Kildonan Park
Kildonan is a 99 acre park on the banks of the Red River in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada. The park has an Olympic size pool available for swimming in the summer and an ice skating rink for winter skating. It is also the home of Canada's oldest children's outdoor theatre. Visitors come to Kildonan park to enjoy its botanical gardens, boating activities, picnic facilities, and nearby golf course. In the winter it is also a popular spotfor cross-country skiing and toboggan riding.
