Davos, Switzerland is well-known as the
highest altitude town in Europe, and the
site of the
World Economic Forum. On July 9, 2000, it was
also the starting point for a big fight between inline skaters
and Mount Brutalo.
Switzerland is very mountainous, and inline skaters
are constantly challenging themselves to
be more and more daring on skates in that country, even when they are afraid
of those challenges.
Cyclists have the dreaded Mont Ventoux in the Tour
de France, and inline skaters have "Monte Brutalo" at the
Davos Alpine Uphill!

The July 9 race to Mount Brutalo's Flüela Pass is the only uphill race in the
2000 Swiss Inline Cup. This was a tough race, with a difference in altitude of
827 meters over 16.8 kilometers. Two long distance skiers from the National
Swiss Team finished first and second. (See ranking below!)

The route to the Flüela Pass, ran through a wonderful
landscape, made more beautiful by the fresh fallen snow
from the night before.
Most of the racers however, could not enjoy that scenery because
they had to fight against the steepness, the altitude, and the cold.
One of the few skaters who seemed to be enjoying the beautiful scenery was
Phillipp Schneider, as you can see from the above photo.
Presumably he was less pleased with his finishing time!

The big winners of the event were the members of the Swiss Cross Country Ski Team.
Most of the top international racers were conspicuous by
their absence. Apparently they didn't dare to accept this
difficult challenge!
