The FIRS Catalonia Controversy

On November 26, 2004, the International Roller Sports Federation (FIRS) will vote on whether or not to finalize the provisional FIRS affiliation that was granted to the Catalonian Roller Sports Federation in March of 2004. FIRS recognizing Catalonia and allowing them to have their own team at international competitions has been a controversial topic within Spain, because Catalonia is a region within Spain.

FIRS Rejects Catalonia - Oliveras Expected to Resign
On November 25, 2004 the Executive Committee of the International Roller Sports Federation reversed their March 2004 recognition of the Catalonian Roller Sports Federation

Will the President of FIRS Resign?
I have heard rumors that Isidro Oliveras, the president of FIRS may resign if Catalonia is not recognized as a full member at the November 2004 FIRS Congress.

Catalonian "Freedom" Wins a Gold Medal for Spain
A team from the town of Olot in Catalonia won a world championship medal for Spain in the 2004 show skating competition on Saturday, November 20. The theme of their beautiful performance was "Freedom".

The FIRS Catalonia Controversy Heats Up

    Catalonia Gets Its Skates On (March 31, 2004)
    This UK Guardian article by Giles Tremlett says FIRS' provisional recognition of the Catalonian Federation angered Spain's outgoing conservative government and encouraged the Basque region's roller sports federation to request FIRS recognition also.

    Roller Sports: Setting the Precedent (March 30, 2004)
    This article on the official Web site of the World Games says the FIRS recognition of the Catalonian Roller Sports Federation will encourage other Catalan sports federations to apply for full recognition by their international governing bodies.

    The Wheels have Been Set in Motion (March 30, 2004)
    According to this article at Berria.info, the Spanish Supreme Sports Council (CSD) planned to file an appeal with the International Roller Sports Federation (FIRS) requesting that the provisional recognition of the Catalonian Federation overturned. The CSD also planned to send protest letters to all of the national roller sports federations of the world.

    FIRS Provisionally Recognizes Catalonia (March 26, 2004)
    In March of 2004 the International Roller Sports Federation (FIRS) provisionally recognized the Catalonian Roller Sports Federation and 12 other national roller sports federations. In November of 2004 FIRS will vote on whether or not that provisional recognition will become official.
