KHUSHBOO'S HABIT OF ALWAYS REMAINING AT THE TOP

Khushboo Saini is a teenager if age is calculated by days and years, and a veteran if the calculation goes through by medals, trips to victory podium, hours spend on vigorous exercise and maturity sprinkled when on skates.

Khushboo is a current Indian National Roller Skating (speed ) champion and the fastest Indian women on skates. She was barely 15 when she waves the tri color of India on the victor podium for the Bronze medal in the 9th Asian Roller Skating Championship in Taiwan in year 2001. This all has made her incomparable skater.

She is a skater of class, which is not only to be analyzed by reading the length of this article, but also to be analyzed by going behind the article in search of her dedication, devotion and commitment for skating.

Khushboo (18) a resident of Faridabad, India, is a student of Gargi College (Delhi University ), pursuing B.A Pass (1st year ). She started skating at the age of 9, in 1996. This was the first time when her legs took a ride on wheels driven by her feet. Gradually with a pace of time her skates has turned her from beginner to amateur, she start taking a interest in the game and taking a early rise, she participated in her first National, 34th National Roller Skating Championship in Patiala, in year 1996. Though her name was not in the medal tally, Khushboo never gave up and make her self good of every championship. Quest to explore world has moved her to the victory podium for 3 bronze medals very next year , in Pune Nationals.

Her hunger not merely stopped to these 3 medals, and by the time she has achived the three big "D" - dedication, discipline and determination- which is needed for an athlete to be a champion. In the year 1998 in Vishakhapatnam National roller skating championship she make her self rich by adding 3 silver and 2 bronze medal in her kitty.

Now it was the year 1999, when every body was worried about Y2K problems, she was busy in preparing herself to hold the pride of Indian color. In this year at 14, she was selected for the first time to represent India in the 8th Asian Championship in China. From this championship her domination started as she was selected in India squad at no 1 position. In China she had the experience of participating in 300 mts. Time Trial, 1000 mts. and in 3000 mts., and placed her self to 5th, 8th and 6th position respectively. In championship she was not able to place her self in victory bracket, but she left a mark by becoming the fastest Indian women skater on foreign tracks by clocking 31.70 sec in 300 mts. Time Trial.

After coming from China, she latter participated in 37th National Roller Skating Championship in Chandigarh and became the National champion by clinching 4 gold medals.

Year 2000, we all stepped in to a new spectrum, where victory can easily be viewed. In this year in Faridabad Nationals she retains her title by crossing the finish line for 4 times at first spot. In the same championship which was held in her home town, she delighted everyone by the howling sound which was produced when she write the National record of fastest Indian women skater on Indian tracks. She proved her domination by clocking 32.83 sec in 300 mts TT. Now she became the fastest Indian women skater on Indian as well as in foreign tracks. This gave her recognition of "Khushboo Saini - The Girl on Flying Wheels".

Like a true champion she was not satisfied with her achievements, and moved with a ideology; that "every time and at an every level there is a place for improvement". This mind setup has inspired her to do better, her hard practice and sincerity and coach John David’s guidance has again honored her of representing India in World championship in France and in Asian championship in Taiwan in year 2001.

After the world championship in France where she took part in 8 races, she participated in Asians in Taiwan. In Taiwan she created a history by helping her relay team to won a bronze medal. This was the first time when any Indian women speed skater has won a medal in Asian championship.

In year 2002 she won 2 gold and 2 silver medals in Vishakhapatnam Nationals. In the third quarter of year Khushboo suffered a knee injury, but as she has the habit of not giving up, she participated in 32nd National Games Hyderabad and has to satisfy with a lone bronze medal.

Not up to the mark performance in previous championship, she practice too hard and her long practice session and sleepless nights again placed her in the top form. In this year 2003, Khushboo marched back with a bang and kissed the hat trick of yellow metal and also added a white metal in her medal tally in the 40th National championship held in Kolkata.

To be at this position her parents Mr. Santosh Kumar Saini and Mrs. Kamlesh Saini are always with her with the open arms. Her sister Medha Saini who is also a National level Skater is more like a supporting pal than her sister. Khushboo’s talent in the roller skating has awarded her a Governor cash Award thrice for her excellence performance at National level for year 1999, 2000, 2002. She was also awarded by the District administration on 15th August and on 26th January. Khushboo’ talent has made her famous, that an age of 16 years she had a pride of inaugurating a skating rink of prestigious club of Faridabad, Gymkhana club.

Khushboo is preparing hard under her coach John David. Her morning practice starts at 5:00 am till 6:30 am and than moved to her college Gargi, where she practices from 7:30 am to 9:00 am. In the evening she practices for three hours. Her practice includes cardio, endurance exercise, weight training, swimming and skating. Hard and intelligent practice for six hours will definitely help her in improving her International medal tally.
