The sport of inline skating is growing in Kenya, with new clubs appearing in Nairobi, Mombasa, Kisumu City, and Nyeri Town. Here is a May 2005 update on the status of inline speed skating in Kenya, by Joseph Mwangi Muchiri, coach of the Kenyan National Inline Speed Skating Team.

Skating in Kenya

All of the local speed skating clubs in Kenya are training very hard to compete in the 2005 Kenya National Speed Skating Day which will take place on July 24,2005. On that day the Kenya junior and senior national teams will be selected.

According to Joseph Mwangi, coach of the Kenya National Inline Speed Skating Team, there are four skating clubs registered with the Kenya Roller Sports Federation:

Hope Skating Club
The Hope Skating Club of Nairobi was founded by Mr. Joseph Mwangi, who is the current chairperson, and Miss Linda Mwihaki, also known as Pinkie. The club trains on the sports grounds of the University of Nairobi Monday through Friday from 4 pm through 7:30 pm. The club has 54 members as of May 2005 and the majority of them are university students. Their training area is a 5 minute walk from the city center of Nairobi. The club can be reached at telephone numbers +254 721 63 77 79 or +254 722 45 77 25.

Satellite Skating Club
The Satellite Skating Club of Nairobi is headed by "Edmond" and they train in the Satellite area, which is a suburb of Nairobi City. This club has some very promising skaters.

Nyeri Speedskaters Club
The Nyeri Speedskaters Club of Nyeri Town is one of the new up-and-coming clubs outside of the city of Nairobi. The clubs is in its infancy stage inder the leadership of George Mungai, and they train within Nyeri town.

Pumwani Inline Skating Club
The Pumwani Inline Skating Club is another new club, and they are based in the Pomwani area of Nairobi City. The club manager is "Victor" and it is said that the future of skating in Nairobi is in the hands of this club because the majority of its members are under 10 years of age.

More clubs are popping up all over Nairobi and other parts of Kenya including:

  • Mombasa City Group (coastal city of Mombasa)
  • Jericho Estate Group (Nairobi)
  • Kisumu Speed Skaters Group (Kisumu City)
