The town of Orebro, Sweden is building a covered bicycle trail
that can be used by cyclists and others on snowy winter days.
Have you ever heard of a bike path that was covered for use on snowy winter days?
The Town of Orebro in Sweden has put together
a proposal to build just such a path, so residents can
use their bicycles (and hopefully their skates!) for
transportation, even on the coldest
and snowiest days.
Orebro is the 7th largest town in Sweden, and it is
located in the Province of
Narke, directly inland from Stockholm.
The Covered Bicycle Path Project:
In 1999, the City of Orebro started implementing a new program
to improve their transportation system. The new plan
included
money to improve the roads,
city bus system, and paths for bicyclists and pedestrians.
The amount of funding allocated
for each of these transportation
systems (auto, bus, and bicycle) was approximately the same.
A committee was established to determine
if covering bicycle paths would convince more people
to use them for transportation, instead of their
automobiles.
One of the things the committee has decided to do, is hold a
competition for architects. In April of 2001, seven architects will be asked to
give the committee their best ideas for covering
a bicycle path.
A jury from the committee will select one of the
competition entries as the best solution.
After the competition is finished, and a winner has been
selected, the committee will decide if it is feasible
to use the winning solution to actually build a test stretch
of a covered bike path in the City of Orebro.
I'm not sure if any other city or country has tried
anything like this, but I hope Orebro decides
to build the covered path,
and I hope the project is a huge success (and of
course I hope
they will permit skaters to use the new path!)
