Eddy and Dave at Gilmans Point
Photo reprinted with permission from Dave Cooper
In January of 1998, Eddy Matzger and Dave Cooper skated
up 19,340-foot Mount Kilimanjaro in Tanzania, Africa.
They both wore special-purpose off-road inline skates.
Eddy skated up the mountain on Roces
Enduros and
Dave wore Rollerblade
Coyotes (see "Off Road Skates" for more information
about these skates).
They started the climb on January 9 and reached the top six days later.
Here's the whole story, with photos and videoclips.
The Press
When I originally wrote this article
for About.com back in 1999 I included links to
articles in the Detroit News, Inlineskate.com,
and Skating.com, but those articles have disappeared
from the Web. I will try to get permission to reprint
all of those articles at SkateLog.com
Dave Cooper's Story
Dave's articles and photos of the trip are no longer
available at InlineSkate.com
but I will try to get permission from Dave to publish them here.
