The 2000 Cactus Classic inline speed skating marathon
took place on Sunday, Novermber 5, 2000 near the town
of Tucson, Arizona.
Think about taking a trip to Tucson Arizona, where you can visit the
Titan Missile Museum,
tour a beautiful Spanish mission known as
"White Dove of the Desert", and
introduce your kids to the fascinating, human shaped
Saguaro Cactus Plant.
And as long as you're there, you can spend Sunday morning skating
through the desert in a challenging full or half distance inline skating marathon:

The marathon is actually held about 20 miles south of Tucson,
in Sahuarita Arizona, and it is a benefit for the
Pima Community College Foundation Scholarship Fund and the Tohono O'odham
Community College Scholarship Fund. The event features:
-
Custom Designed Trophies
-
Cash purse
-
Awards for Age Groups
-
Free Verducci skates for top money-raiser
-
More than $5000 in raffle prizes!
-
Food, beverages and T-shirts for all participants
THE FULL MARATHON ROUTE
is a real challenge,
with hills to climb, railroad tracks to cross, and some
rough roads that world champion skater
Chad Hedrick called "13 miles of cobblestones".
The road is suppose to be somewhat smoother this year, but
still... don't expect the the full marathon event to be a "Fun Roll".
THE HALF MARATHON ROUTE
starts with a long, straight, smooth downhill,
followed by some flat road skating, and ending with a
significantly uphill stretch to the finish line. This
route will be an enjoyable skate for most recreational
skaters, but they should be prepared for a climb at the end.
pRegistration begins at 6:00 a.m. on race day, and the race begins at
7:00 a.m. Registration fees are $45 on race day ($35 for participants
who were able to register in advance by mail, but it's a bit late
for that now).
