Cactus Classic Newsletter - March 9, 2003
by Race Director Diana Coonce
This newsletter is to give you an update on the Cactus Classic VII
Marathon and Fitness Skate Sunday, November 2, 2003 in Oro Valley
Arizona (just north of Tucson).
Registration
If you register by April 11, 2003 you can take advantage of the
lower fee and team discount. You can register three easy ways,
(1) go to our
application form and print out the registration form to
mail in or (2) click on
Active.com or (3) fill out the registration
form on our flyer and mail it in.
In 2002 we had a half price fee, which was great for registration.
This year we will not be able to offer as good of a deal.
Insurance rates have increased considerably so our rates
must reflect the increase. But, in checking the fees for other
events, it is still one heck of a bargain!! Fees go up on April 12th,
so register soon. Registration will be available on race day.
Registration Fees
$45 per person if paid by 4/11/03 *
$65 per person if paid 4/12/03 to 11/01/03
$75 per person if paid on 11/02/03
* There is a $5 discount per person for teams of 10 or more
if registration is paid by April 11, 2003.
Free Raffle Prizes
This year we have more prizes than ever! And the grand prize is
really special. We have a Pennsylvania Amish tour from Zephyr Tours
as our grand prize this year! Stay tuned for the list of more
goodies to be given away this year!!
If you have already registered, get a friend to register
(who is not currently registered) to skate the event and
you will get an additional free raffle ticket for lots of
product from our sponsors.
Hotel
Special room rates have been set up for the Cactus Speed Classic at the
Holiday Inn Express Suites, 10150 N. Oracle Rd. in Oro Valley, which is
just 10 minutes from the start line. The rooms are beautiful suites and
you can have four (4) to a room.
The hotel is offering a $30 discount
until October 17. But remember to mention the Cactus Classic to get your
discount. The phone number is 1-800-465-4329. Don't delay! Last year the
hotel filled up.
Bont Fun Roll
On Saturday, November 1st, there will be a fun roll sponsored by Bont.
Glenn Koshi of Bont will provide refreshments and raffle prizes for those
who participate in the fun roll. The skate will start at 3:30 pm sharp at
the parking lot on River Road between La Canada and La Cholla. The parking
lot is on the south side of the street, across from the golf driving
range. The pathway is along the Rillito River Park (see
Fun Roll locator).
The fun roll will be non-competitive and leisurely. The Rillito River Park
loop is about nine (9) miles of smooth asphalt with some underpasses on
the pathway. A map is posted on the web site or you can get a map and
directions at pre registration at the Holiday Inn Express.
Glenn Koshi mentioned something about really cool raffle prizes at the
Bont Fun Roll.
Course Update
The course will be at the same location as the last two (2) years.
There was some misunderstanding last year as to where the construction
would take place. It will be east of the course, so there was no need
for the event's course to move to a new location.
The Rancho Vistoso section of the course is scheduled for improvements.
As we find out details, we will let you know.
Parking at the Venue on Race Day
There will be plenty of parking in the Safeway parking lot on the
corner of Rancho Vistoso and Tangerine where the venue is located.
The start/finish is on Tangerine, just around the corner from the
parking lot.
Pre-Registration and Packet Pick-up
Pre-registration will be Saturday, November 1st, at the Holiday Inn
Express Suites on Oracle Road. You can register for the event or pick
up your packet from 2:00pm to 7:00pm that day. Packets and registration
will also be available on race morning.
Saturday Night Pasta Feed
Arrangements are being made for a pre-race dinner at a restaurant
close to the hotel. You will receive additional information as the
arrangements are confirmed.
Entertainment
Special arrangements have been made for entertainment while the results
are being tallied. And, as always, lots of food and beverages will be
available at the venue.
Things to Do
Why not make your trip a vacation too! There are lots of things to do in
Oro Valley, Tucson and the surrounding areas in November. The temperature
is usually around 70 degrees and great for outdoor activities. There are
numerous hiking and mountain biking trails, walking tours and lots of
other outdoor recreational activities, not to mention some great skating
pathways in Tucson. And, Oro Valley has some of the finest hiking trails,
bike paths and golf courses in the area,
OroValley.org. For more about
