LAKE BUENA VISTA, Fla. (August 27, 2003) - More than 1500 inline skaters from around
the world descended upon Disney’s Wide World of Sports Complex near Orlando in March
for the sold-out inaugural Walt Disney World Inline Marathon. The full marathon drew
approximately 1,000 registrants and approximately 500 for the half marathon from
professional to recreational skaters. With the success of this year’s event,
plans are already underway, as registration for the 2004 Walt Disney World Inline
Marathon Weekend begins online September 1st at www.disneyworldsports.com.
Disney Sports Attractions has increased race capacity to 2,000 participants for the
May 2, 2004 event date, which will again race skaters across Walt Disney World Resort.
Skaters of all abilities may register online directly or print an application to be
completed and mailed. Entries received on or before April 1, 2004 are $70 for the
Inline Marathon and $50 for the 13.1-mile Inline Half Marathon. Entries received
April 2-30, 2004 are $80 (Marathon) and $60 (Half Marathon), respectively. The entry
fee is non-refundable/non-transferable and race day registration will not be available.
Discounts are available for groups of 10 or more.
"In it’s inaugural year, the Walt Disney World Inline Marathon received an overwhelming
response," stated Mike Millay, Disney Sports Attractions director of sports.
"Our organization looks forward to growing both the popularity of the sport and
the annual participation in this event. Our event has generated a great deal of
enthusiasm in the close-knit inline community and we hope to have another successful year in 2004."
Disney’s inline event will include a full weekend of activities, kicking off with a Skate
and Fitness Expo on Saturday, May 1 at the Milk House at Disney’s Wide World of Sports
Complex. Representatives from the skate and fitness industry will be available to answer
questions and exhibit the latest inline products and services. Participants will pick up
their race numbers and goody bags at the expo from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.
In addition to the Saturday, May 1 activities is the All Star Kids Classic. The event will
feature three inline races for kids: the 100-meter dash (ages 3-6), 400-meter dash (ages 7-9) and
1600-meter dash (ages 10-12), beginning at 1:00 p.m. Registration will be available
online in advance of the event or on race day from 10 a.m. to noon. The $5 entry fee
is non-refundable.
The race will incorporate "wave starts" for professionals/masters skaters starting at
6:00 a.m. and open skaters beginning at 6:45 a.m.
Disney’s Inline Marathon will start at Disney’s Wide World of Sports Complex. The loop
course will whisk skaters down Hollywood Boulevard inside the Disney-MGM Studios and
along a charming coastal village at Disney’s Boardwalk Resort, before skating past
the eleven nations that comprise World Showcase pavilion at Epcot. The race will
circle back to Disney’s Wide World of Sports for the Half Marathon finish, while the
marathoners will complete a second loop for the full 26.2 miles.
The competitive inline skating season runs March through November with other major
marathon events, the North Shore Inline Marathon in Duluth, Minn., and the Long Beach
(Calif.) International City Marathon. The Duluth Marathon in mid-September, will
celebrate its eighth annual event and included 4,500 skaters, while the Long Beach
event, planned for Oct. 12th coincides with the city’s running marathon and annually
attracts close to 1,000 skaters. Other domestic inline competitions include the A2A
(Athens, Ga., to Atlanta), Casino Niagara International Marathon in upstate New York,
and the New York City Skate Marathon.
