WALT DISNEY WORLD INLINE MARATHON
TAKES SKATERS AROUND THE WORLD
Joey Mantia of Team Hyper Captures Second Annual Walt
Disney World Inline Marathon in 1:19:35
LAKE BUENA VISTA, Fla. (May 2) - Joey Mantia (Ocala, FL)
of Team Hyper raced to the
finish in a time of 1 hour 19 minutes and 35 seconds to capture the Second Annual
Walt Disney World Inline Marathon on Sunday morning at Disney’s Wide World of
Sports Complex. Cecelia Baena (Cypress, CA) of Team Hyper, who crossed the line
in 1 hour 34 minutes and 3 seconds, was the top female finisher for the second year
in a row as more than 1,700 inline skaters from 37 states and seven countries
competed in the Walt Disney World Inline Marathon and Half Marathon sponsored by
the International Inline Skating Association.
The thrilling men’s division finish included the 18-year-old Mantia skating
just two seconds faster than Dane Lewis (Mission Viejo, CA), 1:19:37, and
four seconds ahead of U.S. speed skating Winter Olympian KC Bouttiette
(Park City, UT) of Team Hyper, who placed third in 1:19:39. In the woman’s
race, Kelly Gunther (Clinton Township, MI) finished a mere second behind Baena.

"It was an amazing race. The course and the fans made the event very entertaining,
and being so close to home made it even more special," said Mantia. "It was
especially great to win this year after finishing a disappointing thirteenth place
last year."
U.S. Olympic speed skating medallists Derek Parra (Orlando) and
Jennifer Rodriquez
(Miami) officially started the race, which whisked skaters down Hollywood Boulevard
inside the Disney-MGM Studios and along a charming coastal village at Disney’s
Boardwalk Resort, before skating past the 11 nations that comprise the World
Showcase at Epcot. The race circled back to Disney’s Wide World of Sports
Complex for the half marathon finish, while the marathoners completed a second
loop for the full 26.2 miles.
The Walt Disney World Inline Marathon Weekend kicked off with a skate and fitness
expo on Saturday at the Milk House at Disney’s Wide World of Sports.
Representatives from the skate and fitness industry exhibited the latest inline
products and services. More than 80 children also participated in the All Star
Kids Classic as Olympic luge medallist Chris Thorpe officially started the races.
Thorpe and Parra followed the event with an autograph signing for the young
inline skaters.
Spread over 200 acres adjacent to the Walt Disney World® Resort, Disney’s Wide
World of Sports® Complex plays host to more than 170 events each year for
professional and amateur athletes in some 30 sports. The state-of-the-art
facility includes nine venues and is home to more than 40 Amateur Athletic
Union (AAU) National Championships, Atlanta Braves Spring Training, Tampa Bay
Buccaneers Training and the All Star Cafe sports-themed restaurant.
