Zephyr Skate Camp - May 2003

Hilton Head Island Skate Camp
Part 3 - A Typical Day at Camp

Not being a travel day, day 2 was more typical of a normal
camp day, because it included two instructional sessions – one
in the morning and one in the afternoon.
Some campers ate breakfast in their "villas," which were
actually fully equipped condos. Others took the short walk to
Harbour Town to take advantage of Zephyr's three other
breakfast options (a bakery, a full buffet or a continental
breakfast buffet). Promptly at 8:45, the husband and wife
team of
Randy and Olive were the first ones ready to climb
into the vans that shuttled everybody to the hockey rink
about three miles away. They were determined to learn as
much as possible before returning to their small town 1000
miles north of Vancouver.
Each morning's clinic at the rink started out with a brief
guided stretch, announcements about the day's schedule and
a review of the skills learned in the prior clinic,
sometimes in the form of games. Fun-loving
Audrey cracked
everybody up with a uniquely revealing glimpse of her
inner child during the "Stop, Drop, and Wiggle" relay.
Martha's face shined with child-like delight on discovering
how well the "scooter" push could improve her left
skate's weaker stroke.
The motivation
to gain an effective heelbrake stop was
palpable and audible on the morning of day 2, especially
with
Brian’s successful "brake-through." He had his brake
pad squeaking in stop after stop --to the envy of all.
By the 11 AM break, at least half the group had strong
enough basic skills (striding, turning, braking) for
a "mini" trail skate on the bike path to Palmetto Bay
for lunch. And by day 3, a good many campers couldn't
wait to test their new skills in "the real world" on a
portion of the Sea Pines' 17-mile bike path network.
Each afternoon, skaters who opted to return to the rink
instead of participating in the guided trail skate,
including a few of the more experienced folks, received
one-on-one assistance and personalized skill-building.
