Century Pacific Coastal Skate
Suggested Directions
Start at Santa Ana Train Station (corner of Santa Ana Blvd. and Santiago Avenue) Exit train station on Santiago Ave and turn left; turn right on 6th Street(you have to) Take first left, on Poinsetta. Go 2 short blocks, turn left on 4th St.

You will stay on this road for a long time (approx. 10-15 miles?). 4th St. changes name twice. First to Irvine Blvd., and then to Trabuco. (For skaters sometimes the sidewalks will have better surface than the road.)

You will pass El Toro Rd. The next street you pass is Cherry Ave. Right after Cherry Ave. turn right on to the bike path that follows the creek. (On this bike path watch for a few sharp turns, some bumps and a wooden bridge.) Stay on bike path about 1.5 or 2 miles, till Muirlands Blvd. Turn left on to Muirlands.

Stay on Muirlands until it ends at La Paz. Turn right onto La Paz. Turn left onto Cabot (first street after going under the Freeway).
***Watch for rolling hills with some traffic lights.

Stay on Cabot until it ends at Paseo de Colinas. Turn left ****This starts a bad down-hill with a bad ending –traffic light and 180 degree turn - about 2 blocks long – you may want to walk it. Stay on Paseo de Colinas; it ends with a 180 degree turn intersecting with Camino Capistrano. Turn left onto Camino Capistrano.

After a short distance on Camino Capistrano, there will probably be a sign saying the road is closed ahead. The road is actually closed to cars for about 200 yards. It is a little gravelly, but you can get through on skates or bikes.

In a few miles (at the end of a long skinny park) turn right on to La Zanja. Go a short distance to T-intersection and turn left on to Avenida De La Vista. Near where street ends, veer right on to the bike path. Surface is bumpy at first, but gets better.

In about 1 mile you turn right and go over a bridge to the other side of the river. Stay on bike path till it ends at ocean. Get on PCH going south.

PCH becomes El Camino Real. Stay on it till it ends (at Christianitos Rd.) At Chritianitos Rd., right across from the 5 Freeway South off-ramp, you leave the streets on to a paved path.

In about 1 mile, veer left, go through a fence and get back on a road, Old Highway 101. You will stay on this for awhile. You pass the nuclear power plant and then you enter San Onofre State Beach (day use and camping). The road continues straight through this state park area. At the end of the state park area, continue straight on the road, by going through a small opening in the fence (so that no cars can go beyond this point). In a mile or 2 you come to a tunnel on your left. Go through the tunnel. ****Do not stop in the tunnel, tanks go through this tunnel, very fast, with almost no room between the tank and the walls.

After the tunnel, bear right. Stay on this roadway for 1.5 miles till it T-intersects with Las Pulgas Rd.

***This is our re-grouping point, before getting on freeway. Estimate 45 miles

Turn right on Las Pulgas Rd. Then get on 5 Freeway South. Exit Freeway at first exit, Harbor Dr.

Right on to Harbor Dr. Left at T-intersection.
As you go down a short steep hill, bear left.
At T-intersection (by ocean) turn left.

Right on Breakwater Way. (I know it says “do not enter”.) A short distance after the pier you need to turn left up a short steep hill. Right on to Pacific St. Go about 1.5 miles and go Left on to Cassidy. Go 3 blocks. Right on to PCH.

From here you can basically stay on PCH for approximately 20 miles until La Jolla, but there are a number of places where it is more enjoyable to take roads that parallel PCH.

The following are options to staying on PCH.

In Carlsbad take the first right, go down Pacific Ave. and then turn left on Ocean St. This re-joins PCH in ¾ mile.

****lunch meeting spot, in Carlsbad, where Ocean Avenue runs into PCH. (If you are on PCH heading south it is where it first hits the ocean in Carlsbad). Harbor Fish House and other options near by. (Approx. 60 miles)

In Encinitas: Turn right on to Grandview St. Left on to Neptune. Stay on Neptune till end. Left on to Sylvia. Right on to 3rd. Left on to A St. Rejoin PCH. Watch downhill into traffic light.

In Solana Beach, right on to Ocean St., left on to Acacia, right on to Cliff, and Left on to Sierra. Take Sierra to end, left on to Border; right on to PCH.

In Del Mar, right on to 29th; and from there you can turn left and, for about 2 miles, you can stay on streets that parallel PCH (Ocean Front to Ocean to Stratford Court). Stay on Stratford Court past the guard gate till the road ends and continue on the sidewalk, which brings you back to PCH. ***This route through Del Mar has quite a few speed bumps. Bikers may prefer to stay on PCH and not turn on 29th.

Now you are back on PCH, toward the south end of Del Mar.

At the end of Del Mar, on PCH, there is a down hill approaching a traffic light (intersection on left, not on right). Watch the light, the traffic and the parked cars.

Now you take PCH up the Torrey Pine grade; 1.5 miles long, a killer after 75 miles of riding.

***Aid/Support Station; at top of the Torrey Pines grade, look for a blue Hyundai 4x4 SUV, a sign that says "100" and Frank Landfield. (cell # is 760-617-7666). Approx. 80 miles.

About 1 mile after top of hill turn right on to North Torry Pines Rd. (If you miss the turn and continue straight, the road becomes Genesee and goes down a big hill to 5 Freeway.)

UCSD is on your left. In about 1.5 mile turn right on to Torrey Pines Rd. You will be turning away from UCSD. This is a long down hill; watch for lots of bumps in the road. After long down-hill, there is an up hill.

Right on Prospect. You are now in congested La Jolla, watch the traffic.

Right on Jenner. This takes you down a hill, be careful.

Go to the ocean and turn left.

From here I follow the ocean for a few blocks, and then basically follow the signs for the bike route (which keeps you close to, and paralleling, the ocean).

This will eventually bring you to the northern end of the beach strand in Pacific Beach. You will stay on the strand for about 2 miles, through Pacific Beach and about half way through Mission Beach. (This strand is jam-packed with people. I find it a fun sensory overload. If you don’t like the crowds and resulting slow speed, you can take Mission Blvd. which runs parallel to the strand. About ¼ mile south of Pacific Beach St. you can move inland a little beyond Mission Blvd. to the bike path that runs along Mission Bay.)

Turn Left on to Ventura, which in one block becomes W. Mission Bay Dr. (There is a restroom on the left on the Strand, just past Ventura. There is a roller coaster on Ventura one block away from the beach.)

This next part can be tricky. After you go over a bridge, take first right, then immediately turn left (you are skating in a big parking lot). You are now going parallel to W. Mission Bay Dr. Stay to your left and watch for a path that brings you up to a bridge. Go over the bridge.

Stay with the fast moving traffic for a few hundred yards.

Turn left on to Nimitz. (this is a bad, congested intersection). Continue on Nimitz till a T-intersection with N. Harbor Dr.

Left on to N. Harbor Dr. Stay on N. Harbor Dr. till Ash.

Left on to Ash. Go 2 blocks.

Right on to Kettner.

Amtrak station is on your right in 1.5 blocks.
