1500+ Skaters Will Participate
As of March 1, 1500 skaters had registered for the 2003 Disney
World Marathon, and because that was very close to the maximum
capacity of the race route, very few skaters were permitted to
sign up after that date.
Friday Night Fun Roll
Zephyr Skate Tours is organizing
an 8:30 pm fun roll the Friday night before the Disney Marathon. This
event is free and all skaters
are welcome, including the general skating public.
For more information see
Fun Roll Before the Disney Marathon
Meet Me At the Vendor Expo
I will be at the Disney Marathon Vendor Expo all day
Saturday March 29, so I can meet
skaters from all over the world when they pick up their
race packets.
I will be sharing a booth with Zephyr Skate Tours,
and there will be a special guest with me for at least
part of the day: Tony Chen. Tony is the webmaster of
the
SkateFAQ.com, one of
the very first, and still one of the most
popular, inline skating Web sites on the Internet.
Please stop by the Zephyr Skate Tours booth to
say hello to me and Tony, and pick up one of my SkateGRRL.com
magnets.
The Vendor Expo will be in the Milk House at the
Disney Wide World of Sports Complex.
Race packets can
be picked up between 10 am and 8 pm (10:00 and 20:00).
See the end of this article for a list of skate
manufacturers who will have booths at the expo.

About the Disney Marathon
Description of the Marathon Route
The route is a 13.1 mile loop that marathon skaters will do
twice and half marathon skaters will do once.
The loop begins and ends at the Disney World of Sports
complex and the route passes through Disney MGM
Studios, Epcot Center, and
Disney's Beachfront Boardwalk.

Skating Surface - Expect Wooden Planks
IMPORTANT NOTE:
Skaters need to be aware that not
all of the skating surface is perfectly smooth asphalt.
Skaters will encounter a variety of surfaces on the route,
including wooden planks on the Disney Boardwalk portion
of the route.
Here are some photos of the various skating surfaces you
will encounter when you're skating the 2003 Disney Marathon:
MGM Studios
Epcot World Showcase
Epcot World France
Beachfront Boardwalk
How to Skate on Wooden Planks
WHY YOU NEED TO BE CAREFUL:
When you skate on wooden planks you need to make sure
your skate wheels do not get lodged in
the spaces between the planks. If that happens
you can be immediately thrown off your feet without any warning.
HOW TO SKATE ON WOODEN PLANKS:
Skating on wooden planks is not difficult, if you
remember to use a stride that will not allow your
wheels to get lodged between the planks.
Two ways to accomplish this are (1) skate with your
toes pointing out to the sides, similar to the technique
used by many skaters to climb a steep hill without rolling
backwards, or (2) skate diagonally back and forth
across the planks so your skates are never oriented parallel
to the boards. When using either of these methods, you
need to be careful not kick the skaters around you or
make any sudden movements that will unexpectedly
put you in the path of another skater.
Pick Up Your Race Packet - When and Where
You must go to the Vendor Expo on Saturday to pick
up your race packet because (most likely) you will not be able to
pick up your packet and registration number at the
starting line on Sunday. The Expo will be from 10 am
to 8 pm on Saturday, at the Milk House in the
Disney Wide World of Sports Complex.
Arriving on Race Day
The inline race will begin at 6:30 a.m. on Sunday,
March 30, 2003, but skaters and spectators should
try to arrive
at the Disney World of Sports Complex before 5:00 a.m.
because the surrounding roads will start closing about that time.
IMPORTANT: Race particpants *must* arrive
at the staging zone by 5:30 a.m. to find out which
starting wave they will be assigned to.
