Federation of African Roller Sports (FARS)

In July of 2004 the African Confederation of Roller Skating was renamed the Federation of African Roller Sports (FARS). Here is a report by former FIRS president Isidro Oliveras from the July 2004 FARS Congress in Cairo Egypt.

FROM FIRS PRESIDENT ISIDRO OLIVERAS
JULY 6, 2004

EXTRAORDINARY SUCCESS, that is all I can say after being present at the FARS Congress (Federation Africa Roller Sports) which took place in Cairo. In connection with the Congress, we had a Speed Seminar leaded by the International referee Roberta Marchegani , which was indeed most fruitful for the great number of attendants. At the end of the Seminar there was a closing ceremony for all the participants and certificates were given to all of them by Dr.Nabih El Alkamy , Mr,Mohamed Abdel Mawly , Dr. Nelly and myself.

During the Congress of the AFRICAN FEDERATION a change of Constitution was approved, the old name ACFRS is now FARS and the rest of FARS’s Constitution was pretty much being drafted following FIRS rules.

Dr.Nabih El Alkamy was unanimously re-elected as President of FARS and so was Dr. Nelly as Secretary General and Mr. Augustus NWEKE (Nigeria) was elected Vice President.

The Technical Committees for the four disciplines were also elected.

We had a very good representation from African countries, including Libya, Tunisia , Cameron , Egypt , Sudan , Nigeria , Kenya . Latest absences were Angola , Moçambique and South Africa.

The main item at the Congress was development of roller skating . FIRS has undertaken and agreement with the Government of Catalonia whereby 10 countries per year shall receive technical help to develop our sport . Five of those countries will be from Africa and that shall be decided by FARS President Dr. Nabih El Alkamy.

The intention also is to help to have at least a speed skater of each of those countries at the World Championships in Italy next August , FIRS and the Organizing Committee will make all the efforts to have this thing happen.

As President of FIRS and under the request of FARS Congress I took the compromise to strongly support the celebration of FIRS Congress in the year 2006 at the city of Cairo as recognition of the important roll that Africa has to play in the near future.

Dr. Nabih El Alkamy and the President of the Egyptian Federation Mohamed Abdel Mawly have proved enough to be well capable of perform and organize a FIRS Congress at the best standard of quality.

I am looking forward for my next visit to Africa and I am sending a message to all the developed countries of roller skating: PLEASE CONSIDER SENDING YOUR OLD EQUIPMENT TO AFRICA. THEY NEED WHATEVER YOU CAN OFFER, OLD SKATES, STICKS, ETC., ANYTHING THAT CAN BE SENT WILL BE OF EXTRAORDINARY IMPORTANCE, you can do so by coordinating your efforts with the President of FARS Dr.Nabih El Alkamy.

~ Isidro Oliveras, President of FIRS
