December 2004 USA Long Track Championships
Day 1 Report

Report on day 1 of the December 2004 United States Long Track Ice Speed Skating Championships at the Pettit National Ice Center in Milwaukee, Wisconsin on December 18, 2004.

LAMB SKATES LIKE A WOLF
PARRA OVERCOMES BROKEN AND BRUISED BONES

MILWAUKEE, WISCONSIN (December 18, 2004) - On the opening day of the U.S. Long Track Speedskating Championships at the Pettit National Ice Center, Maria Lamb (River Falls, Wiconsinated to an overall lead in the allround competition as well as the 500-meters.

Skating to a 40.95 finish in the 500-meters, Lamb took home the gold. She was trailed closely by hometown favorite Ericka Hawke (West Allis, Wisconsin), who finished second in 41.29. Nancy Swider-Peltz, Jr. (Wheaton, Illinois) took home the bronze medal in 41.72.

"Iím really happy with my skating today," Lamb said. "I had a goal and I accomplished it."

Also pleased with the womenís 500-meters results was U.S. Speedskating Long Track national coach, Tom Cushman. "The top three finishers are all junior women and they have really come on strong today," Cushman said.

Lamb skated an impressive 3000-meters as well, finishing second behind Catherine Raney (Elm Grove, Wisconsin). Kristine Holzer (Boise, Idaho) captured the bronze medal in the event.

On the menís side, Derek Parra (Orlando, Florida) was a walking textbook of bruises and broken bones. Still recovering from a bone bruise in his ankle from a fall in Europe, Parra skated with a broken middle finger on his right hand sustained from a snow blower incident.

In the 500-meters start, Parra was in a crouching position when his hand slipped on the ice. He was not cited with a false start.

"I have sandpaper on my finger to help me in the starting position," Parra said. "I just couldnít get my hand to create the needed pressure."

Nevertheless, Parra skated to a third place finish in the 500-meters. Shani Davis (Chicago, Illinois), returning to long track competition after an impressive World Cup showing in short track only a few weeks ago, ruled the event with a 36.360 finish time. Chris Needham (Cambridge, Massachusetts) won the silver medal.

Davis also skated an impressive 5000-meters that earned him a silver medal. Chad Hedrick (Spring, Texas) took home the gold with a finish time of 6:38.59. Parra finished third.

The Championships continue Sunday with the conclusion of the allround distances. The sprint distances will take place Tuesday and Wednesday.
