December 2004 USA Long Track Championships
Day 2 Report

Report on day 2 of the December 2004 United States Long Track Ice Speed Skating Championships at the Pettit National Ice Center in Milwaukee, Wisconsin on December 19, 2004.

MILWAUKEE, Wisconsin (Dec. 19, 2005) - For the third consecutive year, Shani Davis (Chicago, Illinois) clinched the overall title in the allround competition at the U.S. Long Track Speedskating Championships.

After winning the gold in the 1500-meters event in 1:47.73, Davis went on to a second place victory in the 10,000-meters event finishing behind winner Chad Hedrick (Spring, Texas).

"The 1500-meters is my event," Davis said after his victory. "I feel that I skated strong."

Hedrick, entering the 10,000-meters event at the last minute, skated alone.

"My goal was to be consistent in every lap," Hedrick said. "I felt strong and was fine being alone."

Hedrick placed third in the 1500-meters behind Davis and Derek Parra (Orlando, Florida). Hedrickís strong performance gave him a second place standing in the overall ranking.

KC Boutiette (Tacoma, Washington) finished third overall as well in the 10,000-meters. In the 1500-meters, he finished seventh.

On the ladiesí side, 18-year old Maria Lamb (River Falls, Wisconsin) claimed the overall allround championship title. Lamb took home the gold in the 5000-meters event, finishing in 7:38.44. Kristen Holzer (Boise, Idaho) finished second in 7:47.67 followed by Margaret Crowley (Winnetka, Illinois), who finished in 7:54.57.

Holzer and Crowley also took home the silver and bronze, respectively, in the overall standings.

"Iím happy with my performance today," Lamb said after accepting her awards. "I feel that I am closer to my goal, which is to compete in the Junior Worlds."

Hometown heroine Chris Witty (West Allis, Wis.) won the gold in the 1500-meters with a 2:02.29 finish time. Catherine Raney (Elm Grove, Wisconsin) finished second followed by Amy Sannes (St. Paul, Minn.).

"Chrisís victory is a stepping-stone for her returning to top-shape," U.S. Speedskating long track national coach, Tom Cushman said. "Her training is really beginning to pay off."

The U.S. Speedskating Championships will continue on Tuesday with the sprint distances.
