DOUBLE GOLD FOR RODRIGUEZ

Milwaukee, Wisconsin (December 21, 2004) - After a rest day, United States skaters returned to the Pettit National Ice Center Tuesday to begin the sprints portion of the U.S. Long Track Speedskating Championships.

Jen Rodriguez (Miami, Florida) skated away with two gold medals and took the lead in the ladies' overall standing after two out of four races. "I'm happy with my racing today," Rodriguez said. "My legs are still fatigued from the World Cup in Europe but my skating is better."

Rodriguez finished the 500-meters in 39.00, followed by hometown heroines Chris Witty (West Allis, Wisconsin) finishing in 39.69 and Elli Ochowicz (Waukesha, Wisconsin) in 40.01. "My skating has shown improvement from two weeks ago," Witty said of her 500-meters performance. "As long as I keep progressing, I'm happy."

In the ladies' 1000-meters, Rodriguez captured the gold in 1:17.19. Witty won the silver medal in 1:17.79, followed by Amy Sannes (St. Paul, Minnesota) who finished in 1:19.79.

On the men's side, Joey Cheek (Greensboro, North Carolina) won the gold medal in the 500-meters with a 35.94 finish time. Tucker Fredricks (Janesville, Wisconsin) took home the silver medal with a finish time of 35.96 and Shani Davis (Chicago, Illinois) finished third in 36.13.

Cheek and Davis returned to the award podium with a silver and bronze medal finish, respectively, in the men's 1000-meters. Nick Pearson (Vernon, Wisconsin) won the event in 1:10.44.

After two out of four races in the sprints portion of the Championships, Rodriguez leads with a total of 77.595 points, followed by Witty (78.585) and Sannes (79.925).
