THE X GAMES WILL MOVE TO LOS ANGELES IN 2003
The Summer X Games will move from Philadelphia to
Los Angeles in 2003, and the events will take place
at Staples Center, the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum,
and probably a couple of other places. Since I live
in Venice Beach, I will be an active volunteer and
journalist for those games, and you can expect plenty
of articles, photos, interviews, and news stories
between now and August, when the games will take place.
BELGIAN SKATER KILLED BY GALE FORCE WINDS
On October 27, 2002, a 13 year old skater was killed
in the Belgian coastal town of Wenduine when he was
blown into the mechanism of some construction machinery.
Here is more information about this tragic accident.
(it breaks my heart to think about this boy and his family)
JOIN ME IN LAS VEGAS - EVERYONE IS WELCOME!
Join me in Las Vegas December 5-8 for the First Annual
Congress and Expo presented by the United States
Roller Sports Federation. The general skating
public is more than welcome to attend this 3-day
workshop with dozens of presentations and workgroup
sessions covering all types of skating including
recreational, artistic, hockey, speed skating and
even skateboarding.
This a chance for all skaters (including the casual
recreational skater) to meet up close and personal
with the most important personalities in the U.S.
roller sports world including officials, national
coaches, and dignitaries from the U.S. Olympic
Committee, the U.S. Roller Sports Federation, the
International Inline Skating Association, and many
other national skating and sports organizations.
For a schedule of events, speakers, and sessions see:
Congress Expo - Schedule of Sessions
For all other information see:
Congress and Expo - All Information
If you attend this very important event, you will have
an opportunity to personally influence (and help
to mold) the future direction of recreation, speed,
hockey, artistic skating, and skateboarding in the
United States.
CHAD HEDRICK LAUNCHES 2003 WORKSHOP TOUR
Chad Hedrick, the most celebrated inline speed skater
in the history of the sport, will conduct a series
of indoor speed skating clinics in 2003. The clinics
will be held in different parts of the United States
to help draw new skaters into speed skating and promote
the sport of inline skating in general.
SKATE IN BEAUTIFUL HAWAII WITH EDDY MATZGER
Join me and the skaters of Honolulu for an Eddy
Matzger Workshop in Hawaii, followed by a week of
fun rolls, picnics, and social activities hosted
by local skaters on the Island of Oahu. I'm working
with the skaters of Honolulu to help them publicize
and promote this workshop because they were forced
to cancel their 2002 workshop for lack of sign-ups
(it is not easy to fill up a workshop with Hawaiian
skaters because Hawaii is not such a big place)
Here is more information about the workshop and a
list of my personal favorite hotels in Waikiki
(the New Otani and Waikiki Joy are very special...)
SKATE IN HAWAII WITH EDDY MATZGER
IMPORTANT NOTE ABOUT SELECTING A HOTEL:
Usually you will not be allowed to skate in the
middle of Waikiki, so keep that in mind when you
select your hotel and decide whether or not
you want to rent a car. Also, if you rent a car,
be sure to ask your hotel about parking. I recommend
that you stay at the New Otani Hotel or another
hotel on the far Diamond Head end of Waikiki Beach.
A REPORT FROM THE SAN FRANCISCO GRAVITY FESTIVAL
The U.S. National Inline Downhill Championships in
San Francisco produced a surprise winner this year.

A NOTE FROM KATHIE
I keep holding off on sending my newsletter until
I can finish more of my "in-progress" articles, but
that is a bad strategy because I end up waiting
too long. So I'm sending this newsletter today,
even though I'm still trying to finish up several
significant articles, and in the future I will try
to send a newsletter every week, as long as I have
at least 4 or 5 items to announce.
PLEASE HELP ME GET THE WORD OUT ABOUT SKATELOG.COM
I'm trying to get the word out about my SkateLog.com
Web site and you can help me by asking your favorite
skating webmaster to add SkateLog to their
"favorite links" list. Just to avoid confusion:
My SkateGRRL.com Web site is mostly a huge link
directory and SkateLog.com is where I publish
skating articles, photos and news stories written by
me and guest authors.
ABOUT POSTING MY NEWSLETTER ON YOUR WEB SITE
You are very welcome to post all or part of my
SkateLog Newsletters on any Web Site or message board
if you don't mind including the URL of SkateLog.com
(http://www.skatelog.com)
when you do it.
KATHIE IS BECOMING AN ICE SPEED JUNKY!
I
've decided to travel to Heerenveen Netherlands
for 3 days in January to attend the European Ice
Speed Skating Championships, and visit my friends
in Groningen and other nearby areas. While I am
there, I will also interview world-famous Dutch
sports photographer Ewoud Broeksma. Maybe I will
even have some photos of myself taken by this
talented man, who takes the most beautiful, exotic,
and clever photos I've ever seen of skaters and
other athletes. You can see some of his work here:
EWOUD BROEKSMA - HOME PAGE
To prepare for this trip I am giving myself a crash
course in European speed skaters - who they are,
what they look like, and trying to anticipate who
will win big in Heerenveen in January. If you're
interested in following my research you can see all
of my notes and photos and links here:
Kathie's Ice Speed Skating Notes

first 3 articles listed below.
