JESUS ROLLER SKATING IN VENICE BEACH
"Happy Holidays to My Friends Around the World"
This very unique mural was painted by Father Maur Van Doorslaer and it is mounted on the front of a Lutheran Church very near my home in Venice, California.

MY 92 YEAR OLD SKATING BUDDY
Think you're too old to skate a marathon? Think again! 92 year old Allen MacDonald of Southern California learned to skate when he was 80 years old and he skated the Tahiti Half Marathon at Age 89.

CHRISTOPHE AUDOIRE IS LEAVING TEAM SALOMON
Big news from FaSST Magazine: Internationally renown coach Christophe Audoire will no longer coach Team Salomon or Team India. Read all about it in this FaSST Magazine article.

USA ROLLER SPORTS CONGRESS AND EXPO
In early December I attended the First Annual USA Roller Sports Congress and Expo in Las Vegas. I have so much to tell you about that event... all the important people I met, what I learned, and some of the issues discussed at the various sessions (I hope some of the presenters will let me publish their papers on my Web site). But all of that will have to wait until my next newsletter, so stay tuned.

BRITISH SKATER WILL COACH THE DANISH TEAM
The Danish National Inline Speed Skating Team has acquired a new coach. Here is an announcement from the Danish Speed Skating Federation.

EDDY MATZGER WAS ON "RIPLEY'S BELIEVE IT OR NOT"
Eddy appeared on this TV show recently, and guess what he had to do? Read about it here.

SKATE AN ENDURANCE SPORTS FESTIVAL IN BRAZIL
Skate, cycle, swim or run in the August 2003 World Endurance Sports Festival in Bahia, Brazil. 5 events in 8 days plus a big party at the end.

BONT IN THE HOT SEAT - PUBLIC REACTION TO THEIR AD
The last issue of FaSST Magazine included a Bont ad that is generating a lot of controversy because it featured a photo of a skater wearing no clothes. Take a look at this copy of the ad so you can form your own opinion. Be sure to send a note to Bont and FaSST telling them how you feel about the ad.

No matter what you think about Bont's ad, you have to give them credit for one thing: They are publishing ALL of the reactions to their ad - good and bad - on their public Web site for the whole world to see. Bont really cares what their customers think about their advertising policies and more than that, they are honest enough to share even the negative reactions. PUBLIC REACTION TO THE BONT AD

    HALLOWEEN SKATING IN LITHUANIA
The skaters in Vilnius Lithuania always have fun on their skates. Here are some photos of their 2002 Halloween Skate through Old Town Vilnius (Halloween skate photos from other cities are coming soon)

PHOTOS OF A CANADIAN ROLLER GIRL
Meet Lisa Suggitt, aggressive quad roller skater and the webmaster of ROLLERGIRL.CA

    SWEDISH SKATERS IN VENICE BEACH
Finally some of my friends from Sweden came to visit me in Venice Beach. Karin, Gunnar, and Per kept me laughing that entire day. Here are some photos...

SPANISH SKATERS FROM ASTURIAS IN BELGIUM
Very few things make me feel as good as traveling halfway around the world and being recognized by a skater who visits my Web sites. It does not happen often, but when it does, I love it! Here are photos of my new friends from Club Patin Enol in Asturias Spain, who recognized me at the 2002 Speed Worlds in Belgium.

HONOLULU MATZGER WORKSHOP - IT'S TIME TO SIGN UP
If you are interested in attending the Eddy Matzger workshop in Honolulu February 21-23, now is the time to sign up. You can register on Eddy's Web site:

WHERE YOU CAN MEET ME IN 2003
JANUARY - Netherlands (Euro Ice Speed Championships)
FEBRUARY - Honolulu, Hawaii (Eddy Matzger Workshop)
MARCH - Orlando, Florida (not confirmed but I hope!)
APRIL - Havana, Cuba (Havana Marathon + Artistic Cup)
JUNE - Nairobi, Kenya (Nairobi International Marathon)
AUGUST - X Games in Los Angeles (woo hoo!!!)
SEPTEMBER - Portugal (Hardball Hockey Worlds)
OCTOBER - Los Angeles (Long Beach Marathon)
--- More 2003 trips will probably be added ---

I was hoping to make it to the "6 Days of Skating" in Serpa Portugal this year, but since the X Games will be in Los Angeles in August I don't think I can make it to Portugal that month. But I probably *will* be in Portugal in September for the 2003 Hardball Hockey World Championships.

If you would like to meet me in any of the above places send email to kathie@skategrrl.com so we can coordinate our schedules.

AN IMPORTANT NOTE FROM KATHIE (LONG)
Most of you know that in addition to having my own personal Web sites (SkateLog.com and SkateGRRL.com) I am paid by About.com to host and edit their inline skating Web site at InlineSkating.about.com.

I built that site for About.com in 1999, and since that time the company has gone through many changes. The most significant change was when About.com added a large number of pop-up ads to all of their Web sites. In June of 2002 About.com made another significant change: They discontinued the ABOUT SKATING newsletter I was sending on their behalf. About the same time, I started sending a newsletter called "SkateLog" which I use to announce skating news from around the world. That newsletter became so successful, I created a special Web site at for it at SkateLog.com, which has since evolved into something more than just a newsletter site.

THE ABOUT.COM SKATING NEWSLETTER IS BACK
A couple of weeks ago, About.com decided to revive the skating newsletter they discontinued last June. If you recently received a very different-looking newsletter from me, that is why. The About.com newsletter is a red HTML newsletter with several ads, and it is called "About Inline Skating". My personal skating newsletter is a text-only newsletter called "SkateLog". Those 2 newsletters will always be very different because the About.com newsletter will only be used to announce new skating articles on About.com and the SkateLog newsletter will be a more free-form, text-only newsletter announcing skating news from around the world.

    NOW FOR THE IMPORTANT NOTE:
When About.com revived their newsletter they added one new feature. In addition to weekly newsletters edited by me, subscribers will receive a monthly ads-only newsletter that will include this note: "We hope you've been enjoying your weekly newsletter. We deliver it free of charge thanks to our sponsors. Below, you'll find some hand-selected offers we think you'll enjoy."

IF YOU RECEIVE AN ADS-ONLY NEWSLETTER
I want to make it 100% clear to all of my SkateLog subscribers that About.com's monthly ads-only newsletter has nothing to do with my SkateLog Newsletter. I promised you I would never use my SkateLog mailing list for any purpose other than my newsletter, and I take that promise very seriously. If you receive an ads-only newsletter from About.com, it is NOT because you are subscribed to the SkateLog newsletter. It is because you are subscribed to the About.com skating newsletter (both of them are sent by me).

If you want to SUBSCRIBE to the About.com skating newsletter you can do it here:
    ABOUT.COM - SUBSCRIBE

If you want to UN-SUBSCRIBE from the About.com skating newsletter can do it here:
    ABOUT.COM = UNSUBSCRIBE

If you have any questions about any of this, please don't hesitate to contact me at kathie@skategrrl.com
