MORE THAN 100 SKATING EVENTS IN 2003
This weekend I added about 50 events to the
2003 SkateLog Calendar at
/events/calendar/.
You can add your events to this calendar by
sending email to
kathie@skategrrl.com.
PHOTO OF A SKATING TEAM IN IRAN (COOL!)
Iranian skating coach Fariba Fathi was kind
enough to share this wonderful photo of her
artistic inline skating team. The team practices
at the Molasadra Club Roller Rink in Tehran.
A NEW SKATING TRACK IN CARTAGENA, COLOMBIA
The Central American and Caribbean Games will
be held in Cartagena Colombia in 2006, and to
prepare for that event, the city of Cartagena
is building an ultra-modern sports complex that
will include a state-of-the-art patinódromo
(skating track). Colombia is one of the
strongest speed skating countries in the world,
and they plan to build a track that will give
the powerful skaters of Colombia a place to
train and compete that will rival the best
skating tracks in the world.
A NEW NAME FOR THE ROLLER WORLD CUP
The international speed skating series called
the "Roller World Cup" is has a new Web site and
a new name. Select "Calendar" from the menu at
the top of the page to see a tentative schedule
of 2003 events.

SEND A POSTCARD TO A 92 YEAR OLD SKATER
I received an overwhelming number of messages from
people who wanted to know where they can write to
92 year old inline skater Allen MacDonald of Seal
Beach California. Here are some photos if Allen:
I will try to get permission from Allen to give out
his postal address, but in the meantime you can send
postcards and letters to Allen at this address:
Allen MacDonald
c/o Kathie Fry
PO Box 12320
Venice Beach
California 90295 USA
I will deliver mail to Allen at least once a week.
It would be so great if he received postcards from
skaters all over the world!
HONOLULU SKATERS EXTEND A WARM WELCOME
The skaters of Honolulu are hoping many non-Hawaiians
will sign up for the Eddy Matzger Workshop they are
organizing February 21-23. I will let you in on a
secret: One of the organizers of the Great Es-Skate
in Miami recently moved to Hawaii and he is working
with Honolulu Skate Patroller Ginny Hench to plan many
fun activities with the local skaters during the days
following the workshop.
Some of the activities visiting skaters can choose from:
a skating tour of historic Honolulu, a North Shore
BigWave/ShaveIce fun roll, a skaters-only Luau with
Hawaiian food and swimming at Magic Island and (I hope)
some Hawaiian dancing by Ginny's professional troupe.
The local skaters have plenty of other ideas too, and
everybody is welcome to join me on a Hawaiian Music
Bar Crawl through Waikiki (I seldom drink alcohol but
I *love* Hawaiian music and sometimes the tourist hotels
are where the best musicians hang out). This will also
be prime whale watching season, the surfing, swimming,
and kayaking will be grand, and the weather in Hawaii
is always balmy and warm...
Please join us! You can sign up for the workshop on
Eddy Matzger's Web site and if you have any questions
about travel arrangements you can contact me at
kathie@skategrrl.com. My suggestion for a hotel is
to stay at the New Otani Hotel, or one of the other
hotels on the far Diamond Head end of Waikiki Beach.

A NOTE FROM KATHIE - I'M OFF TO HOLLAND
On Wednesday I will fly to the Netherlands for
the 2003 European Ice Speed Skating Championships
in Heerenveen January 3-5, and I'll fly back home
on Tuesday January 7. This will be my first big
ice speed skating event and I am really looking
forward to meeting all of those famous skaters and
seeing them in action.
Happy New Year Everybody!!!!
I hope 2003 turns out to be as much fun as 2002,
and I hope you will all come to visit me next year
in Venice Beach, California (I'm waiting...)
