MAJOR ICE SPORTS DECISIONS EXPECTED AT 2004 ISU CONGRESS
JUNE 7-11, 2004 IN THE NETHERLANDS

Important decisions affecting the future of ice skating sports will be taken at the 50th ISU Ordinary Congress to be held on 7-11 June in the Kurhaus Hotel in Scheveningen, the Netherlands, where the ISU was founded in 1892. The ISU will be honored to welcome the presence of His Royal Highness the Prince of Orange at the opening ceremony and also IOC President Dr Jacques Rogge, who will open the Congress.

Over 70 ISU Member Federations from around the world will debate and vote on over 500 proposals. After a two-day plenary session to discuss the ISU Constitution and General Regulations the Congress will divide into separate sessions for:

  • Figure Skating (including Ice Dance and Synchronized)
  • Speed Skating (including Short Track).
The main topic for debate in the Figure Skating session will be the judging procedure for Figure Skating, Ice Dancing and Synchronized Skating events. Several possible options will be debated, including the new ISU Judging System, which is being proposed unanimously by the ISU Council and Technical Committees. The new ISU Judging System has been improved from the version tested during the 2003/4 season and uses modern technology to enable Judges to assess individual elements of a skaterís program more objectively according to agreed criteria. Judging systems proposed by the Australian and Russian Federations are also on the Agenda.

Full details of the new ISU Judging System, previous press releases and other proposals, such as a comprehensive plan to restructure the ISU with effect from the 2006 Congress, can be found on the official Web site of the 2004 ISU Congress. Daily updates during the Congress will be posted at ISU.org
