2004 US Outdoor Inline Speed Skating Nationals
May 26 through June 1 in Colorado Springs

From USA Roller Sports on May 24, 2004
OLYMPIC ICE SPEED SKATING STAR ROLLS BACK TO INLINE ROOTS

Ice Speedskating Olympian KC Boutiette will be kicking off his summer training at the USA Roller Sports (USARS) Outdoor National Banked Track and Road Speed Skating Championships from May 26 through June 1 in Colorado Springs, Colorado Boutiette will be contending in banked track and road competitions on inline skates under the World Class division.

"I figured out last year why I was skating so well on the ice," said Boutiette. "I was putting on my inline skates in the summer months and skating in the streets. When Iím on inlines, I feel a freedom that you donít really experience on ice. I can do a five or ten mile scenic stretch and not see the same thing over and over again. I really enjoy that."

Boutiette, who has made skating his life, started on inlines in the early 1990ís and competed under USARS before crossing over to ice ten years ago to pursue his Olympic dream. The Olympian trains on the ice from November to mid-March and looks at the spring and summer season as a chance to keep in shape and improve skills through inline skating.

"Itís kind of a kick off to the training season for me," said Boutiette. "Outdoor Nationals allows me to train with the intensity of racing in mind. You donít get that type of intensity in other forms of training."

Boutiette will be competing in both the banked track and road competitions. The banked track championships will take place on Wednesday, May 26 through Saturday, May 29 at the Seven-Eleven Velodrome, five blocks south of the Olympic Training Center in Memorial Park. Opening ceremonies will begin on Wednesday, May 26 at 10:00 a.m., with competition to follow. Rain date for track events is scheduled for Sunday, May 30. The road competition will be held Monday, May 31 through Tuesday, June 1 at Pikes Peak International Raceway, located at 16650 Midway Ranch Road in Fountain, Colo. Rain date for road events is scheduled for Wednesday, June 2.

The National Championships will display the fastest inline speed skaters in the nation as they compete for one of the 16 spots on the 2004 Federation Internationale de Roller Sports (FIRS) USA Senior World Team and eight spots on the USA Junior World Team. Team USA will compete at the FIRS Junior and Senior World Inline Road and Track Speed Skating Championships from August 28 through September 11, 2004, in LíAquila, Sulmona and Pescara Italy.
