Day 5 Report and Results

Memorial Day rolled out the start of the 2004 USA Roller Sports (USARS) Outdoor National Inline Speed Skating Road Championships held at Pikes Peak International Raceway (PPIR) in Fountain, Colorado. Olympian Ice Speedskater KC Boutiette (Park City, Utah) proved duel skating talent when he captured the gold medal in the 20,000m elimination race with a time of 37:14.968, making him a strong contender for this yearís World Team USA.

Boutiette lapped the pack in the 60-lap race for the win. Michael Cheek (Greensboro, North Carolina) rolled in for second place, with Chris Creveling (Kinthersville, Pennsylvania) taking third.

"With a long race like that, you never know what to expect," said Boutiette. "From the start, a lot of the sprinters were attacking, but towards the middle of the race, Michael (Cheek) and I started the break-away. I couldnít believe what was happening."

Boutiette is entertaining the thought of taking a spot on the 2004 World Team USA, however, the Winter Olympics and his ice training are his top priorities. World Team USA will be determined Tuesday, June 1, at the conclusion of the Outdoor National Championships.

Unstoppable World Class Ladiesí Julie Glass (Olympia, Washington) proved yet again to be the top player at the Outdoor National competition, when she took the gold medal in the 200m, with a time trial of 19.141. Glass also picked up the gold in the 20,000m elimination race, with a time of 41:21.204.

Junior World Class Ladiesí Brittany Bowe (Summerfield, Florida) continued to dominate at the championships by setting the national record in the 20,000m elimination race with 40:4.026. Kelly Gunther (Clinton Township, Michigan) stayed strong behind Bowe, capturing second place. Mallory Pracale (North Las Vegas, Nevada) rolled in for third.

"I donít think anyone has the goal to set the national record in a race that long," said Bowe. "I went into the race with a lot of confidence. Kelly Gunther and I dominated the entire race and took turns on the flyers each lap. We wanted to make everyoneís legs tired and make the race more exciting. It was an awesome race, and it feels good to have set the national record."

It was a race against the clock, as World Class Menís William Bowen (Harrisonburg, Virginia) skated hard for the gold with a 200m time trial of 17. 372. Bowen, who also took the gold medal in the 300m time trial on the banked track, beat World Class skater Tony Muse (Des Moines, Iowa) by .409 seconds, placing Muse in second. Joey Colozzo (Palm Beach Gardens, Florida) rolled in for the bronze medal, with a 200m time trial of 17.816.

"I really didnít think Iíd capture the gold," said Bowen. "I wanted it bad enough, but I never thought I could take it with Joey Mantia (Ocala, Florida) and Jordan Malone (Denton, Texas) out there. Iím ready to go home and start training for the World Championships in Italy. Weíre going to have a solid Team USA this year."

Junior World Class Menís Jonathan Gorman (Roswell, Georgia) proved his endurance by winning the 20,000m elimination race with a time of 37:07.383. Kyle Lazzell (Kissimmee, Fla.) took the second place spot, with Darren Kauffman (Waynesboro, Pennsylvania) trailing behind in third. Kauffman also took the gold medal in the 200m time trial with a time of 17.909.

The road competition will be held Monday, May 31 through Tuesday, June 1 at Pikes Peak International Raceway, located at 16650 Midway Ranch Road in Fountain, Colo. Rain date for road events is scheduled for Wednesday, June 2. Banked Track Championships were held Wednesday, May 26 through Saturday, May 29 at the Seven-Eleven Velodrome in Colorado Springs, Colo.
