Britney Spears Sues Skechers
Roller Skate Endorsement Deal Goes Sour

See Also: Skechers Sues Britney

On December 23, 2002, Britney Spears filed a $1.5 million lawsuit against Skechers Footwear of California, saying the company failed to pay her adequately for endorsing a line of quad roller skates and accessories and that they backed out of an agreement to sponsor one of her tours. Some of the claims mentioned in the lawsuit:
  1. The deal for Skechers to promote Britney's own line of skates and acessories fell through because Skechers was slow to find an outside company to manufacturer Britney Roller Skates.

  2. Skechers used the pop singer in their skate advertisements before the Britney line of skates was available, thereby increasing the sales of their own brand of skates.

  3. These things caused sales of the Britney skates to be lower than expected, therefore Spears did not receive the bonuses she expected.

  4. Skechers backed out of a written agreement to sponsor her 2001/2002 concert tour.
Spears is seeking $1 million in damages because of Skechers alleged failure to meet the terms of the Britney Skates endorsement agreement and $500,000 because of the company's alleged failure to meet the terms of the tour sponsorship agreement.

Britney Spears signed an agreement to endorse Skechers footwear in 2001 and she signed a second agreement to endorse her own line of quad roller skates in 2002.

In March of 2003, Skechers filed a counter lawsuit against Spears (see Skechers Counter Sues Britney Spears).
