The Joy of Roller Derby Live

by Wayne Hurlbert

M What it's like to attend a live Roller Derby game, by Wayne Hurlbert of Wayne's Derby World.
You attended a live game, right?

As you entered the arena, your heart raced just a little bit. You could feel the adrenaline start to pump, as you heard the buzzing anticipation of the crowd. The size of the crowd did not matter, as you knew you were among friends, who shared your passion. You were at a derby game!

As you were ushered to your seat, clutching the ticket that would become a lifelong treasure, you were knew you were part of something special. You understood that derby was, and still is, a phenomenon of North American popular culture that has swept the populace like a tide. You knew then, and you still know today, that derby can lift a crowd like nothing else. You know in your heart that derby will return!

As you settled into your seat, the awe inspiring sight of the track astounded you. It was so large, and it seemed to be almost...alive. You studied the high angled banks, and thought to yourself, that there was no way a skater could skate on that thing. You owned at least two cars that could not climb a bank that steep!

You were awakened from your thoughts by the arrival of the skaters. There they were!

The athletic women looked more beautiful than they did on television, or in any of their publicity photos. You recognized them easily, as they were your favourites. For a moment, the red shirted and white shirted women blended together, as if in a dream.

The men were there too. Looking stronger and faster than you ever imagined, the men looked as if they could skate through walls. As the game went on, they proved that estimate to be entirely true.

In what seemed like only a few moments, the game was over! The speed of the skaters, the fights, and the antics had you mesmerized!

You had grown hoarse cheering your favourite team to victory. You rejoiced as the villians got their just desserts in the end.

You knew only two things.

You would never ever forget a single moment of the game.

And you were going to another game as soon as possible!
