Diary of a Beginning Marathon Skater
Day 4: Skating at the Beach

Today I decided to park my car near the beach and skate from my car to one of our beach bicycle trails.

Skating to the Trail Was NOT a Good Idea
by Doan-Trang Tran

Again today I woke up so ready to do my practice. I was excited and I imagined myself skating much better today. I had everything planned inside my head. I will park in a parking lot, then skate slowly to the beach trail and I will have a cool practice.

I packed up my skates and drove to Marina del Rey Beach to practice at 5:30 PM. I put on my skates and gear, my back pack, and I locked my car. Here I go...

Well, my imagination was way more than what I could handle.

It was NOT easy to skate from the parking lot to the trail. The road was hill up and hill down only a little bit, but it was enough to knock me out of balance. There are people and cars crossing all around me. I tried to manage myself making it safely to the trail.

It was one of those days when all you can say is "going down". I fell at least seven times during my one hour practice. This is BAD!!! My left knee and ankle hurt. I am exhausted. At the end of the day I tried to see why I did so badly.

Here is my advice for other beginning skaters:

  1. Do not skate from the parking lot to the trail. It may look easy but it is not for you.

  2. My beach trail was not a good place for a total beginner to practice because it was narrow and it had a lot of turns.

  3. Do not skate with your back pack, it may throw you off your balance. Wait until you can control your skates to do so.

  4. If you buy a used skates, check the wheels. You may need to rotate or replace them.
Oh, I forgot to tell you that I bought used skates and the wheels are worn out. I blame those skates for my falls.... you know I need to blame something.

I was so tired after skating, but I wanted to replace my wheels immediately. I bought an 8 pack of TRUE 76mm - 80A wheels and replaced them all by myself. I did not have any problems replacing them at all (but more about that later...). I felt much better after I finish replacing the wheels. But I need to rest for at least two days so (hopefully) I will be able to attend my next class on Saturday.
