The Wedding

Kathie: Theresa, on what date did you and Gary get married?

Theresa: Our wedding was on January 17,2004 - 4 years to the day that we started dating.

Kathie: Where was the wedding?

Theresa: Our wedding was in Grand Rapids, Michigan, USA at the Christ Community Church at 4:30pm.

Kathie: And the receiption?

Theresa: The reception was just around the corner at the Best Western Midway at 6:00pm.

Kathie: Who were some of the guests?

Theresa: Our guests included our family’s from USA and Australia, my Maid of Honor, Desly Hill (a World Champion and Australian World Team coach), Gary’s Bestman, Corey Price (A Junior World Champion and Senior Silver Medallist and Gary’s team mate), Jessica Smith (World Champion), the Wolverine Speed Team, all my coaches from past and present, my school teacher from high school, Molly DeVrudge (my bridesmaid and like a little sister to both of us), and many more friends.

Kathie: What did your wedding dress look like, and what did Gary wear?

Theresa: For the description of my dress and Gary’s Tuxedo I have included a picture. It’s better to see for yourself and also for the description of the bridal parties clothing see pictures.

Kathie: Who was in the Wedding party?

Theresa: Desly Hill was the Maid of Honor, Molly DeVrudge, Bridesmaid, Corey Price, Best Man, Darryl Helmers, (Gary’s brother) Groomsmen, David Cliff (my brother), Usher, Rodney Helmers, (Gary’s brother) Usher, Alyssa Helmers, (Gary’s Niece) Flower Girl, my Aunt Jo and Uncle Mel, Master and Mistress of Ceremonies.

Kathie: What kind of flowers?

Theresa: Our flowers were roses.

Kathie: What kind of wedding cake did you have?

Theresa: We will include a picture of the cake…. I don’t know how to describe it. It was chocolate with white icing, and lights and pillars, very pretty, that’s all I know. ?

Kathie: Do you have any interesting stories to tell about the wedding? Did everything happen as expected or were there some surprises?

Theresa: Before the wedding Gary and I were both had some stresses.

I had been dreaming for about 2 weeks before the wedding that I would be late. In the Church were I got ready was downstairs…. so at the wedding I was trying to get up the stairs and walk down the isle before I was suppose to (people were still in the lobby). Desly and Molly were holding me back by my train. One thing that did calm me down was Mandy O’Neil brought me some twizzlers. ?

Gary had another problem on his hands; all the boys were still sleeping in their hotel room 1-½ hours before they were to be at the Church. The wedding was beautiful though; all the lights were dimmed and it was by candlelight. Neither of us had any mess-ups and both of us were on time.

Then on to the reception. Desly had lost her speech that she stayed up writing the night before and also lost a speech from one of our friends from Australia that couldn’t make it to the wedding. So she rushed to the front desk of the hotel and used their email to get the speech from Mick (our friend) and just winged her speech. But all went good - she got through it easily and it was very good. Not to mention the Bestman’s speech - also very good.

We walked into the reception to the Chicago Bulls starting line up music. Our dinner was your choice of Chicken Piccata, Chicken Kiev, or Roast of Sirloin. Our first dance was to the song of Notting Hill, "When you say nothing at all" by Ronan Keating. Then onto the interactive partying, with group dancing, games, bouquet toss, garter toss, anniversary dance, dollar dance, ect.

There is one funny story about the dollar dance though. Remember the Maid of Honor and the Bestman are from Australia and their wedding receptions are a little different. They don’t have the dollar dance so we tried to explain what it was to them but obviously we didn’t do it well enough. So on to the dollar dance, we gave Desly the jar to collect for the dollar dance!. then all of a sudden we lost her. We were standing by the dance floor calling her name and then we found her - with the jar - full of money already. She went around collecting for the dollar dance first. So we had a full jar before we even started the dance. THANK YOU DESLY. ? A new tradition!
