About Suzhou, China

The 2005 Inline Speed Skating World Championships will take place in Shuzhou, China August 27 through September 4, 2005. Here is some information for visitors to that city and general information about traveling in China.

Where is Suzhou, China?
The city of Suzhou is located in the far southern tip of the Jiangsu Province of China in the middle of the Yangtze Delta on the shores of Lake Taihu. Suzhou is approximately 100 miles northwest of the city of Shanghai. Suzhou is sometimes called "Gusu City" and you will also hear it referred to as "Su". On the Lonely Planet China Map Suzhou does not appear, but nearby Shanghai does. You can see both Suzhou and Shanghai on this Travel China Guide Map.

How is "Suzhou" Pronounced?
The city's name is prounced approximately like this: SUE-JOE (like the girl and boy English names "Sue" and "Joe") except that I think the "j" sound in the second syllable is soft instead of hard.

How to Get There
Suzhou is about 150 kilometers from the Shanghai Pudong International Airport and about 90 miles from the Shanghai Hongqiao Airport. Drivers will take the Shanghai-Nanjing Expressway from the Airport to Suzhou. The train ride from Shanghai to Suzhou takes approximately 60 minutes. It is also possible to take a taxi to Suzhou from one of the Shanghai airports for a cost of something under $100, depending on which transportation service you used and which airport you were departing from.

Suzhou Geography and Climate
Approximately 10 percent of the Suzhou area is cultivated fields, 30 percent is hilly, and the rest of the area is covered with water. The streets and alleys in Suzhou are arranged side-by-side with a series of interlocking canals, reminding many visitors of Venice, Italy. The climate is mild and humid.
