1995 Summer X Games
June 24 - July 1, 1995

The idea of holding a competition for extreme sports athletes was first conceived by ESPN Programming Director Ron Semiao in 1993. After two years of preparation, the first Extreme Games - later known as the X Games - took place in Rhode Island and Vermont from June 24 through July 1, 1995. 198,000 spectators attended that first event and the official Extreme Games I sponsors were Advil, Mountain Dew, Taco Bell, Chevy Trucks, AT&T, Nike and Miller Beer.

The Very First X Games Gold Medal was awarded to Justin Sears in the Barefoot Waterski Jumping competiton. That event was only part of the X Games for four years.

The X Venture Race, an eco-challenge style race, sent five-person teams on a 250-mile race of mountain climbing, kayaking, rafting, power hiking and sailing from Maine to Newport. All five team members were required to travel - and cross the finish line - together. Team Thredbo from Australia won the debut event in 1995. The X Venture Race was only part of the X Games for 3 years.

Skateboarder Tony Hawk Came Out of His First Retirement at age 27 to compete in the first Extreme Games. Tony retired again in 2003 after wining Vert Best Trick with his second 900 spin at the 9th Summer X Games.
