HUNTINGTON BEACH, Calif. The very first competition at
X Games IX ended today by making history three different
times: by kicking off its first-ever year in the Los
Angeles-area, by hosting its first-ever Surfing competition
and by featuring The Game(tm), a revolutionary new team format
that made its major competition debut. The teams were split
by the East and West Coast; after an incredible match-up
featuring the world’s best surfers, the East Coast surfed
away with the win.
In front of a crowd of 25,500 fans at Huntington Beach Pier,
the world’s best surfers competed in the debut of The Game.
After a close first quarter between the two teams, the East
Coast Team came out strong in the second quarter with an
all-star line-up of Kelly Slater (Cocoa Beach, Fla.),
Corey Lopez (Indian Rocks Beach, Fla.), Taj Burrow
(Yallingup, Australia) and Shane Dorian (Kona, Hi).
The East Coast Team kept their lead as Burrow pulled a
huge 180 air, followed by Slater’s impressive backside
cutbacks. The third quarter’s prize was Aaron Cormican’s
(Orlando, Fla.) crowd-roaring frontside 360 air. As the
fourth quarter developed, both Teams were vying for the
lead, but the East Coast Team pulled ahead for the win.
The East Coast Team led every quarter and finished with
209.06 points to beat the West Coast Team, who had a total
of 188.20 points.
"We’ve been talking about The Game concept with Brad
Gerlach for two years," said Rob Machado (Cardiff-by-the-Sea,
Calif.) of the West Coast Team. "Today it was everything, the
people, the stands, the talking trash, the team camaraderie.
It was a giant step and a great thing for Surfing."
"In the world of professional surfing, there’s a world
champion," explained Slater. "In the X Games, in The Game
format, you win as a team."
Two Surfing teams comprised of East and West Coast surfers
competed in four quarters with each quarter broken off into
two twenty-minute heats. Each team included two international
wild cards, which allowed the teams to add other surfers from
other parts of the world. Each of the two teams (East Coast
and West Coast) has eight surfers, and each heat is surfed as
a team. Four surfers from one team go out for the first
twenty-minute heat, and then four surfers from the other team
go out for the quarter’s second fifteen to twenty-minute heat.
The Game was created by world-class surfer Brad Gerlach.
