2003 Los Angeles X Games
Women's Skateboard Events

WOMEN’S SKATEBOARD PARK AND VERT
COMPETITIONS FEATURED AT X GAMES IX

LOS ANGELES ESPN X Games IX athletes are joined by 13 of the world’s best female skateboard athletes as they compete in the new women’s Skateboard Park and Vert events held At STAPLES Center August 15 and 17, respectively. The top names in women’s skateboarding are going head-to-head for a chance to win a prize purse and X Games medals. The ninth annual action sports competition will be held August 14-17 in Los Angeles and features more than 300 of the world’s best male and female athletes competing in Aggressive In-line Skate, Bike Stunt, Downhill BMX, Moto X, Skateboard, Surfing and Wakeboard.

X Games VIII in Philadelphia marked the debut of women’s Skateboard Park and Vert in an exhibition Jam Session. The success of those events sparked the addition of a medalled event in X Games IX where there will be a judged contest that results in prize money for each of the athletes participating. X Games IX Skateboard sport organizing body, World Cup Skateboarding, will serve as the organizing body for this contest and will oversee judging and format. Women’s Skateboard Park will take place on August 15 from 12:30 p.m. to 1:30 p.m. The format is that each of the eight athletes has 15 minutes to "jam" on three different sections of the park course. Each section is scored separately. At conclusion of third section, the ladies points are added together to determine a final leaderboard.

Women’s Skateboard Vert will take place August 17 from 6 p.m. to 6:45 p.m. just following the Bike Stunt Vert competition. The format for this contest is that each athlete will have an intro run in the running order of the five athletes, then a 10-minute jam session, and concluding with one final run.

Each of the 13 women who are participating in the Skateboard contests is ranked at the top of their sport. The contests are a display of the progression in women’s skateboarding featuring women who have been pioneers in the sport such as Cara Beth Burnside (Orange, California USA) and the youth and future in the sport such as 13-year-old Lyn Z Adams Hawkins (Cardiff-By-The-Sea, California USA).

The five athletes that will be participating in the Skateboard Vert Women’s Jam Session are: Jen O’Brien (Vista, California USA); Cara Beth Burnside; Lyn Z Adams Hawkins; Holly Lyons (California USA) and Mimi Knoop (Penn.)

The eight athletes that are participating in the Skateboard Park Women’s Jam Session are:

  • Amy Caron (San Francisco, California USA);
  • Karen Feliosa (Sao Paulo, Brazil);
  • Lauren Perkins (Huntington Beach, California USA);
  • Jamie Reyes (New York City, New York USA);
  • Monica Shaw (Pymble, New South Wales Australia);
  • Elissa Steamer (Huntington Beach, California USA);
  • Jessie Van Roechoudt (San Francisco, California USA)
  • Vanessa Torres (Anaheim, California USA)
