Report from ESPN on the Moto X Freestyle competition
at the 2004 X Games at Staples Center in downtown
Los Angeles, California on August 5, 2004.
ADAMS EARNS TICKET TO GOLD CLUB
Is First to Defeat Pastrana in Moto X Freestyle
Los Angeles, California - All that was left for
Nate Adams to do was throw the bouquet.
He's a bridesmaid no more. No more talking about what it's like to put
together the run of your life ? only to sit by and watch someone else do
the exact same thing ? and having to settle for a silver or bronze.
Or not medaling at all.
Adams (Glendale, Arizona USA) put all of that to rest with a backflip-filled
run in the final event of X Games X Sunday night at Home Depot
Center - Moto X Freestyle. The 20-year-old captured his first-ever
Gold medal (he has placed anywhere from second to fourth five times
in the last two years) with a score of 93.80.
"I think this is finally going to make me legit," said Adams. "I got a
monkey off my back. When Travis (Pastrana) started five years ago
I couldn't even do a Heel Click."
On Sunday he was doing Backflip Heel Clicks. And his lethal combinations
edged out
Travis Pastrana (Annapolis, Mdaryland), who finished with a score of 92.00.
Pastrana nailed all of his flips, including a Backflip Knack to Heel Click
Flip, but did not attempt the double backflip that he has been rumored to
be working on.
"I was a little off, but we were safe," said Pastrana, who was still
feeling the effects of a concussion suffered in Saturday night's
preliminaries. "The double is very scary. I will hopefully have it
down by next year."
Adam Jones (Warrendale, Pennsylvania USA)) earned bronze in his X Games debut.
"It's weird to be sitting on the podium next to the best two freestylers in
the world," said Jones, who earned an invite to the X Games in June's World
Freestyle Association Moto X Championships in Las Vegas.
But the night belonged to Adams, who was still pinching himself after the
gold medal was slipped around his neck. "This is amazing. I can't believe
I beat Travis," he said. "This is kind of like his deal."
Chuck Carothers was named Athlete of the X Games for helping move action
sports to the next level with his yet-to-be named Body Varial in Moto X Best
Trick on the opening night of the X Games.
