BUCKY GOES BACK TO BASICS
Lasek overtakes Gagnon for gold on final run
Los Angeles, California -
Bucky Lasek (Carlsbad, Calif.) has been in this position
before. And when it came down to it he went to the heel flip front-side gay twist.
The trick pushed him over the top at last year's X Games Skateboard Men's Vert
competition - and it cinched the deal, once again, at X Games X on Thursday evening.
Lasek, who now has four golds in vert, wasn’t even in the top three entering his
final run of the night. That all changed in less than two minutes, as Lasek put
together a strong run to unseat Pierre-Luc Gagnon (Montreal, Quebec, Canada) with a
score of 95.00.
"Kids out there should just pick up a skateboard," Lasek said. "It's the best thing
I ever did. They may get into a competition one year and be where I am and feeling
exactly how I do now. I knew the competition would be close. I didn’t think I would
beat Pierre."
Gagnon, who took home gold in 2002, was in front most of the night behind strong
runs that included a heel flip indy and a backside 360. But, in the end, he had to
settle for silver with a score of 93.66. "Bucky is the man," said Gagnon. "He
stepped it up and made me step it up. It’s an amazing feeling to be on the podium at
X Games X."
Rune Glifberg (Copenhagen, Denmark), who brought home his eighth X Games medal with
a third-place finish, received an X Games achievement award for competing in all 10
X Games.
"It feels good to be on the podium," Glifberg said. "They gave me an achievement
award for being here 10 years in a row. It was cool and unexpected."
Celebrating its 10th anniversary this year, X Games X is the world's premier action
sports competition featuring more than 150 of the world’s best athletes competing
in: Aggressive In-line Skate, Bike Stunt, Moto X, Skateboard, Surfing and Wakeboard.
The event is being held August 5-8, 2004 in Los Angeles with live primetime daily
coverage on ESPN and ABC Sports. SportsCenter, ESPN's flagship daily news program,
will also report LIVE from X Games X from August 5-7 for the first time in X Games
history.
