Men's Wakeboard Competition Report
2004 X Games in Los Angeles

Report on the men's wakeboard competition at the 2004 X Games which took place at Long Beach Marine Stadium in the city of Long Beach, Southern California on August 7, 2004.

SOVEN EDGES VETS IN SURPRISE
Holds Off Sharpe, Bonifay for Wakeboarding Gold at X Games X

Los Angeles, California - Many felt that two-time champion Parks Bonifay had the event in the bag following his run in the finals of the Men's Wakeboard competition Saturday at X Games X.

But, in the eyes of the judges, 15-year-old Phillip Soven's (Longwood, Florida USA) run that included a Dumb Dumb and a Heel Side 720 on the Double-up was just a bit better. So it was Soven's score of 59.25 that helped seal the youngster's first-ever X Games medal, just ahead of Chad Sharpe (White Rock, Canada) and Bonifay (Lake Alfred, Florida USA)

"I started riding when I was five years old and all the other riders in the competitions have pushed me along," said Soven. "The conditions were perfect today."

Sharpe, who had just one Top-10 finish in his previous four years, rolled out the Whirlybird and the Tootsie Roll along with a Toeside 720 on the Double-up for silver and his best finish at X Games.

"I moved in with (three-time X Games gold medalist) Danny Harf and we rode together every day," said Sharpe of the reason behind his big turnaround. "Hanging out with him made me want to perform better."

The crowd favorite, Bonifay, hit his signature Double Half-Cab roll on the Double-up along with a Switch Whirlybird. Despite the fact that he is the only one who can hit what has become his signature trick, it wasn't enough to put him over the top.

"The crowd was so pumped," Bonifay said. "I'm upset but the crowd made me feel better. They were the loudest I have ever heard them. When I was riding I looked down the beach and it was packed."

Celebrating its 10th anniversary this year, X Games X is the world's premier action sports competition featuring more than 150 of the world's best athletes competing in: Aggressive In-line Skate, Bike Stunt, Moto X, Skateboard, Surfing and Wakeboard. The event is being held August 5-8, 2004 in Los Angeles with live primetime daily coverage on ESPN and ABC Sports. SportsCenter, ESPN's flagship daily news program, will also report LIVE from X Games X from August 5-7 for the first time in X Games history.
