X Games Surfing Moves from California to Mexico
In June of 2005 ESPN announced that
the surfing event at the 2005 Summer X Games will be moved from
Huntington Beach, California to Puerto Escondido, Mexico.

X GAMES 11 SURFING MOVES TO PUERTO ESCONDIDO, MEXICO
LOS ANGELES - The ESPN X Games 11 Surfing competition will move to Puerto
Escondido, Mexico from its previous home in Huntington Beach, Calif. where
it was held for the past two years. The news was announced today by Ron Semiao,
senior vice president, ESPN Original Entertainment. Puerto Escondido is famous
for the big powerful waves of Zicatela Beach, earning the moniker,
"Mexican Pipeline*." The competition is scheduled to be held on August
1, with August 2 being a make-up day, depending on swells. Aside from
Surfing, X Games 11 will be held August 4-7, 2005 in Los Angeles for
its third consecutive year. The move coincides with the announcement
that ESPN Deportes, the U.S.-based Spanish-language network, will air
the X Games live for the first time ever alongside ESPN and ABC’s
live telecasts.
The X Games is the definitive annual action sports competition featuring
more than 150 of the world’s best athletes competing in: BMX Freestyle,
Moto X, Skateboard, Surfing and Wakeboard. X Games Los Angeles-based
venues include STAPLES Center, The Home Depot Center in Carson, Calif.
and Long Beach Marine Stadium. The Surfing and Wakeboard (Long Beach venue)
competitions will be free to the public. All competitions at STAPLES Center
and The Home Depot Center are ticketed events, which can be purchased at
Ticketmaster.com beginning June 15.
"Moving to Puerto Escondido will provide the X Games Surfing competition
with some of the best waves in the world." said Semiao. "We’re also
thrilled at the timing of moving Surfing to Mexico with ESPN Deportes
dedicating live programming to the X Games this year."
X Games added Surfing to the lineup of sports in 2003 with a discipline
called The Game. Developed by pro surfer Brad Gerlach, The Game places
surfers into opposing teams - East Coast and West Coast at the
X Games - competing for an overall highest score and the team victory.
For the past two years, the East Coast team has taken home the gold.
Invited athletes will be announced at a later date.
Due to its earlier date, the Surfing competition will be taped to air
as part of X Games’ Saturday, August 6, live telecast on ABC from
3-6 p.m. ET. ESPN Deportes will have its own original telecast of the
event and will also air it on its Saturday, August 6 telecast (time TBD).
Puerto Escondido is a traditional Mexican fishing village located 180
miles south of the city of Oaxaca and 70 miles west of Huatulco Bay in
an area known as the Emerald Coast for its brilliant jade-green waters.
It has long been known as one of the world’s heaviest places to surf.
The area’s wave season is from May through October, making August an
optimal time for the X Games to hold its Surfing competition. Its
reputation as the "Mexican Pipeline" derives from the fast hollow
waves that break in shallow water allowing surfers to pull in to giant tubes.
*The original Banzai Pipeline is found on the north shore of Oahu, Hawaii.
