Women's Snowboarder X Report

Report from ESPN on the Women's Snowboarder X competition on January 29, 2005 at the ESPN Winter X Games in Colorado USA.

THIRD CONSECUTIVE GOLD A STRETCH JACOBELLIS
Reign continues in Women’s Snowboarder X

Aspen, Colorado - Lindsey Jacobellis knew it was going to be close. So the 19-year-old from Stratton, Vt., crouched low and extended her right arm as far as it could go. It turned out to be enough as she edged Erin Simmons (Vancouver, BC, Canada) by half a body length for her third consecutive gold medal in Snowboarder X Women’s final Saturday.

It was a remarkable effort for Jacobellis, who saw her brother, Ben, taken off the course on a stretcher following a crash in Men’s Snowboarder X quarterfinals moments before her run. Ben was taken to the hospital with a moderate concussion and Lindsey was able to push on and win one for her big brother.

"I got a lot of energy from my brother," Jacobellis said after earning the first medal of Winter X Games Nine as she left to visit her brother in the hospital. "I was thinking about him the whole time. I was able to keep my line and get the strength from my brother."

Lindsey now has four Winter X Games medals (3 gold, 1 bronze) in her five years competing with a chance to add a fifth in Saturday evening’s Snowboard Superpipe competition. She showed her strength on the downhill course, winning not only the final, but her qualifying run Friday and her semifinal heat on Saturday.

Simmons, who was battling Lindsey all the way down the course, was unable to hold on during the final approach. But the 28-year-old, making her fifth Winter X Games appearance, was still pleased with the second-place finish.

"I’m super excited to get second," Simmons said. "I wish I would have won it. But it was a great competition."

Karine Ruby (Chamonix, France) made it two medals in two years with a bronze finish to go along with a pair of Olympic medals in alpine racing.
