THE TOMATO FLIES AGAIN
White back to old tricks after injury; Rice nails Double Backflip
Aspen, Colorado -
Shaun White served notice to the Snowboard world during
the Men’s Slopestyle competition Saturday afternoon - the knee is fine
and he is back.
White (Carlsbad, Calif.) began Winter X Games Nine the same way he did
before a knee injury forced him out of his final two competitions last
year - with a gold after dominating the Slopestyle field with a near-perfect run.
The gold improved his medal count to six (four gold, two silver) with
two events to go in this, his sixth, Winter X Games.
"I love doing victory laps," said White, whose 93.00 after his first run
all but sewed up the first place position. "I didn’t know what to expect.
Every year is different. I’m just here to have fun."
A smooth-as-silk run with back-to-back Fives, a Front-side over the
dealer’s choice pit and a Cab-9 over the money booter at the end not only
allowed White to have fun, but it also took care of the competition part
of his day.
"I had a lot of fun out there today and I can’t wait for the SuperPipe
(finals on Monday)," White said.
For the second time in as many years, Danny Kass (Mammoth Lakes, Calif.)
earned a silver in Slopestyle. He pulled a huge Backside Rodeo to Frontside
5 and a Backside 9 on the booter.
"This was the funnest Slopestyle event ever," Kass said following a score
of 90.33. "The course was just sick."
Travis Rice (Jackson, Wyo.) also returned with a vengeance. After missing
Winter X Games Eight with a shoulder injury, Rice proved he was back to the
form that put him atop the medal stand in 2002.
He nailed a Double Backflip over the gap as well as a Backside Rodeo Nosegrab
on the booter. The course was definitely to his liking and helped the 22-year-old
add a bronze medal to his collection with a score of 87.00.
