Report from ESPN on the Men's Skier X competition
on January 29, 2005 at Winter X Games in Colorado.
FAMILY BONDS ATOP WINNER’S PODIUM
Crist brothers finish 1-2 in Skiing Skier X
Aspen, Colorado - It would have been the perfect script for this pair of film
producers from Sun Valley, Idaho. But, even in the world of movies, things
can seem a little far-fetched. But not for the Crist brothers - at least
not on this blustery day in Aspen.
Zach and
Reggie Crist have been competing in the Winter X Games together for five
years now. And each time the goal has been a 1-2 finish. But that’s a lot
easier said than done - until Saturday afternoon during the Skiing Skier X
competition.
The brothers battled through a field that started with 30 competitors and
was paired down through quarterfinals, semifinals and finals where they
survived each cut and - finally - earned the top two places.
It was Reggie, the oldest (that’s how the script always goes), who claimed
his second Skier X gold and Zach who brought home his third career medal
(one, gold, one silver, one bronze).
"This is the highlight of my career," said Reggie. "I’m just so glad to see
two Crists on the winner’s podium."
Zach was just as happy as his older brother. "The progression of the games
has been incredible," he said. "This is my favorite competition to get out
here in front of the people with this amount of intensity.
"There is never a time when Reggie and I aren’t giving 100 percent."
Enak Gavaggio (Bourg St. Maurice, France) earned his fourth consecutive
bronze in Skier X, upping his career medal total to one gold and five bronze.
"I’m super excited and hope for better results next year," Gavaggio said.
"But I’m pretty disappointed I didn’t win."
